PLEASANT DALE, Neb. - A man accused of trying to steal anhydrous ammonia has been arrested for hitting a police dog.
Seward County Sheriff Joe Yocum said deputies were staking out the Pleasant Dale Co-op tank Sunday morning after the manager reported that anhydrous tanks used for field work had been tampered with the week before.
A 39-year-old Lincoln man was seen climbing one of the tanks and opening a valve to place the chemical in a portable tank he had brought to the scene.
Deputy Brody Duncan identified himself and called for the man to climb down and to get on the ground, Yocum said. The man then fled into dense brush and trees west of Nebraska Highway 103.
Deputy Scott Walton and his police dog Hexa found the man hiding in the foliage.
The man refused to comply with Walton's directions and hit the dog several times with his fists. The man gave up after Hexa bit him in the lower right leg.
The man was taken to the Seward County Detention Center after he was treated for cuts at Seward Memorial Hospital. He was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of anhydrous, theft, resisting arrest, false reporting, cruelty to animals and obstructing a police officer.
Hexa was treated by a veterinarian for cuts and bruises.
Most anhydrous thefts are related to methamphetamine manufacture, Yocum said.

Yea Hexa!
Looking into the face of a police dog, seeing all those teeth and then hitting a dog that already has you down says something about lack of common sense.
BTW...Maybe he figured it was cheaper than going to Earl May, but what's someone from Lincoln need with Anhydrous ammonia?

The defense: My client was acting in self-defense because the dog failed to identify himself as a police officer.

Reminds me of the Great Des Moines Dog Bite Case...

How did that go?

He's probably cooking up meth. Crystal meth tends to be the drug of choice in rural areas because the more well-known drugs (cocaine, heroin, etc..) are relatively exotic and rare in small towns. On the other hand, meth is easy to cook and the ingredients can be purchased at most rural drug and hardware stores. Plus, anhydrous ammonia, a principal ingredient, is used as agricultural fertilizer, so many farmers have thousand-gallon tanks of it sitting around.

This business about fleeing the officer and stealing ammonia (presumably drug-related) notwithstanding, I think they have a lot of gall to charge this guy with animal cruelty. I'm sure it will never happen, but if they sic the dogs on me, I'll do whatever it takes to protect myself from it. Once they put the dog on you, that dog has lost all right to fair treatment. What are you supposed to do, let it tear into you?

A security guard, searching for a prowler, beat heavily on an apartment door that happened to be unlatched. The hammering pushed the door open and the apartment dweller's dog, asleep by the front door, responded by jumping up and biting the security guard, who sued for damages.
The judge ruled against the plantiff issuing a decision that said, "Every dog is intitled to one bite."
The Des Moines Tribune newspaper story lauded the judge with the headline,"Logic from the Bench."

What are you supposed to do, let it tear into you? Yes, you are or be charged with a felony
OTOH, if a policeman shoots your dog just because he feels like it, that is fine. And expect to receive charges related to allowing the dog to attack the policeman (even if it was on a chain or in a cage).

They didn't name the man...I'll bet he was a Mohammed or something...
To: mdmathis6
Uh, usually that type is more like an Earl or Jim Bob.

Anhydrous ammonia can be used to make explosives as well. If it had been a "jim bob" why didn't they state his name like they do with all of "troublesome" white males?
To: mdmathis6
Well OK, maybye, but chances are it's a meth cooker. Maybye he's a Tyrone or Jose or something and that's why they didn't give his name?
