Democrats Shunning Gun Control

Democrats appear to have abandoned gun control as a political wedge, declining to push the issue in Congress despite being given the opportunity by congressional Republicans. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, California Democrat, upbraided President Bush earlier this month for not pushing fellow Republicans to bring the assault-weapons ban up for reauthorization before it expires in September 2004. "The president has announced that he supports the assault ban, and it would be helpful if he used his good offices to do that," Mrs. Pelosi said at her last weekly press briefing before the Memorial Day recess. "I don't know whether he intends to or not." House Republicans consider it a pretty safe bet that he won't, and House Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Texas has stated that the chances of a renewal of the ban coming to the House floor are slim. Yet Democrats still have options

This article is a fantastic commentary on the difference between Republicans and Democrats. A Republican will often raise issues of national interest even though they no the political fight might be a loser. They will do this because they believe it is the right thing to do. To often Republicans have paid the price for their fierce defense of right vs. wrong with the loose of their political power. Yet they persevere, as they prefer to go down fighting the fights that need to be fought. Examples include Republicans that loose seats based on their stances on special interest groups right i.e. homosexuals, race based groups etc.

The Democrats, on the other hand, will shy away from what they believe to be “right” if it, in any way, would undermine their continuing political influence. They willing encourage others to commit “political suicide” in the name of their position yet refuse to do so themselves. No, they would much rather maintain the political position to appoint judges that will carry out their political agenda from the bench, were said judges are immune from the wrath of the voters.

I never thought about it that way but I think you're right.

Tax decreases with military spending get them in trouble all the time and they still fight the good fight.

We still have a problem with the Senate with the RINOS. It's a weak link and until we can get more of a majority, we'll still have problems. I know there's a lot of people who want to abandon the Repubs because they point out we have the "majority" in all houses and the Presidency but it's not that cut and dried just yet.

Mrs. Pelosi said the Democrats might revisit guns "when the issue is ripe."

"When the issue is ripe" means When they have a shooting incident that can be hyped enought that they can use to blood of innocents to futher their political program.

Right, but they do remember Congressional 1994 elections, which was landslide for the Repubs.

The polititcians may be shunning the issue, but the media is just getting started and they will get more and more shrill the closer to the AWB sunset date we get. It's gonna get very very ugly and all the pro-2nd amendment people need to make the media pay everytime one of their biased lie filled anti-gun diatribes is put on prime time.

Ms. Peolosi said, "...when the issue is ripe." I wonder if they are planning on creating an incident, where there is a mass slauhghter, to engender hysteria, so they can force through really repressive legislation?

They're not shunning it, they're shutting up about it until the political climate changes. They agree it's a losing issue right now, so they are de-emphasizing it until after they get elected.
