Two things struck me in this article. First, the fact that the "Iraqi witnesses" insist that she had no grenades, even though she left a "martyrdom" note. The existence of the note supports the soldiers version.
Second, the comments of her father:
"When she left the house, she lost her innocence," said her 71-year-old father, Salih Mutlak. "Had she returned home, I would have killed her myself and drunk her blood."
How can we expect a culture like this to adapt to and embrace democratic principles?

The man is 71. Our hope has to be with the younger generations in Iraq and also Iran. Time will tell.

"...because the 22-year-old woman left the house alone and without permission from her father - thereby besmirching the honor of her tribe. "When she left the house, she lost her innocence," said her 71-year-old father, Salih Mutlak. "Had she returned home, I would have killed her myself and drunk her blood."
This is a civilization?
Just because they walk upright and appear to use language doesn't mean that Iraq has "civilization."
What they call a "tribe" I'd be more inclined to call a "pack" - except that even wolves seem to have more sense than they.

Imagine, she was 22 and this was the first time she had left the house alone.
Tribes! We may HAVE to subdue them in order to bring about change.

"Capt. Josh Felker, public affairs officer for the division's 2nd Brigade, says Mutlak approached a U.S. checkpoint with grenades in her hands and wrapped around her waist. As she walked forward, U.S. soldiers told her to stop, motioning for her to hit the ground. When she continued, they fired a warning shot and yelled for her to stop.Soldiers heard something like a "rock hitting the ground and then an explosion," Felker said - apparently a grenade going off.
The soldiers opened fire, but she still didn't stop. "She was limping or crawling, but was still coming at them," Felker said. "Within our rules of engagement, we defended ourselves and took appropriate measures.""

One thing struck me about this article:
The tribal laws that have ruled the villages of Iraq for centuries say a man can take the life of a daughter or sister if he feels she has betrayed the family's honor. In this deeply conservative culture, Mutlak did just that by going out without permission. Conservative? Call it insane, backward, Islamic fundamentalism but it is not conservative!

Her older sister, Salwa, said Mutlak was an unhappy loner with no friends, and possibly mentally disturbed. "If she had brains, she wouldn't have attacked a tank," said Salwa Mutlak, 30, who exhibited a cold sadness at losing her sister. And this makes her different from the rest of the Arabs in what way? Okay, I know there are a few non-deranged, smart ones out there, but they are few and far between.

"She is a hero to some - a martyr who tried to kill U.S. soldiers with grenades".
A Fascist hero, and beloved by Democrats no doubt. Hated by the free, her death was in vain.

I loath the press.

At least they can't be too upset about her being dead since they'd have killed her anyhow. Maybe about the blood that went to waste.
