Concorde: Final touchdown

New York - An Air France Concorde jet landed at New York's John F Kennedy International Airport for the last time on Friday morning.

The jet landed at 08:10 (1210 GMT).

The French Concorde will make its final flight on Saturday, after 27 years under the Air France banner, as it speeds across the skies from New York's John F Kennedy airport to Paris.

Flight AF001 takes off at 08:00 (1200 GMT) on Saturday, landing a mere three hours and 45 minutes later at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.

The Concordes flown by British Airways - which has a fleet of seven of the 12 supersonic aircraft - will operate for a few months longer out of London before being withdrawn, with New York and seasonal Barbados flights to continue through the end of October.

The only companies in the world to operate this kind of aircraft, Air France and British Airways, jointly announced on April 10 their intention to stop operating the jet because of spiraling maintenance costs and declining passenger levels.

Sad really. But it was a money hole. Look for similar developments when we start reall passenger service to space...

...The question now is...

...Will the supersonic CONCORDE now find it's rightful place sitting in the PLANES of FAME Air Museum in Chino, California...

...struting next to a Japanese Zero, A1E Skyraider, P-51 Mustang, B-17 Flying Fortress, Bell X-2, Mig-15, and a Mig-17...

...as a Matter of History..?

When the Concorde went down in flames (July 25, 2000), the Camp David II peace summit went up in flames at the same time.

Has there been a big doodah peace summit [involving the US] since then? Anybody? I can't keep track of all the bogus peace initiatives.

Funk & Wagnalls STANDARD DICTIONARY

concord n. 1. unity; agreement; accord. 2. peace. 3. a peace treaty. [ME concorde harmony]

I read an earlier article that said one of the Concords is going the National Air and Space Museum.

One of them is going to the Smithsonian Institution; it will probably be displayed at the (not yet completed) Air & Space museum annex at Dulles International Airport (IAD). I hope you enjoy your visit to the lovely Commonwealth of Virginia when you come out to see it!

Virgin Atlantic is trying to get their hands on three of the Concordes using some obscure part of the original Concorde agreement from 1962 that said if BA ever gave up the Concorde another British Airline could oppertate them

British Airways is claiming that since their privatization that doesn't apply anymore.

I wouldn't bury the Concorde just yet, atleast not the British ones. Sir Crazy has alot of clout with the Blair government and because the Concorde is so important to British nationalism he might just pull it off.

Hey, has anyone ever heard the sonic boom of a Concorde?

I know that's the reason why it can't fly at supersonic speeds over the US (& probably Canada). This is partly why it never made money for the airlines - they couldn't make their transcontinental or intercontinental flights as short as the SST's originally promised. I assume it was the EPA who issued their ruling that no SST's could fly faster than sound over US land.

But now that I think about it, I have never heard the sonic boom of an SST. Now I'm wondering what all the fuss was about. Is it really a big problem? Or was this just eco-hysteria, early '70s style?

Maybe the Bush administration should grant a 6-month moratorium on the anti-supersonic rule so everyone in the country can decide for ourselves if the sonic boom problem really exists in the first place.
