NBC’s Campbell Brown on the losers behind Bush’s child tax credit — minimum-wage families May 29 -- At Wednesday's signing ceremony President Bush hailed the tax-cut bill for how much it will help families. But NBC's Campbell Brown reports that's not true for families making minimum wage.

By Campbell Brown NBC NEWS May 29 — At Tuesday’s White House signing ceremony for the tax-cut bill, President Bush lauded the tax cut for how much it would help families, saying it would add “$400 per child to 25 million eligible families” and promising that the check is in the mail. “Those checks will begin arriving in July,” the president said. But not for families making minimum wage.

THOSE WITH INCOMES between $10,500 and $26,625 won’t get any increase in the child tax credit, which for others goes from $600 to $1,000. Children’s advocate groups estimate about 11.5 million children will be denied the benefit — and on Thursday voiced outrage at the administration and Congress. “If all these other kids were included, we could have included these children,” said David Harris, a child advocate. “And we wonder why it happened, and isn’t there somebody who can do something about this?” So why did it happen? It was a last-minute deal, reached behind closed doors, between the president’s team and leading Republicans. The Senate insisted the tax cut be no bigger than $350 billion. Something had to be taken out of the bill; the child credit for minimum-wage families was eliminated.

WHITE HOUSE DEFENDS ACTION On Thursday, White House officials defended the potentially embarrassing decision, saying it was part of the deal-making process. “There were many decisions made that

They won't get it because they've been getting the earned income credit all along..... That's when you don't pay taxes and still get a tax refund.. Funny how the articles I've read this morning and Nancy Pelosi neglected to mention that....

There is a way for people on minimum wage to get a refund on taxes taken from the wages they earn. Merely work 100 hours a week, at two full-time jobs and one part-time job. As they would not have time to go out partying, and barely need any more than a place to nap, all they would need would be a sleeping room, which they could rent much more cheaply than a studio apartment, and put all the money they save in an interest-bearing account. In less than thirty years, they will have accumulated approximately a million dollars or so, and since they are habituated to living on very little money, this is easily more than enough money to last the remainder of their natural lives. But more importantly, they shall have had the opportunity to have actually paid some income taxes, thus allowing them to receive a refund, and the interest earnings they have from their accumulated savings will assure that they may pay income taxes until the day they die, after which the estate shall continue to be liable for payment of taxes. Until the state government confiscates the estate.

Of course, a person with that much initiative would very quickly be working at WAY more than the minimum wage.

I'll tell you what pisses me off - I've seen commercials for Cadillac and they're offering rebates of up to $6500.00
I don't own one, but I don't see why they're aren't sending everyone a check. As it stands, the only people getting a rebate are the "rich" folks who can afford one. And they don't need the money, the poor slobs buying the used Caddy's need the cash.< /sarcasm >

Terry Moron of ABC filed a radio report to the same effect, using the tag phrase, "It looks like President Bush is leaving children behind, after all" (or something to this effect). The visceral hate for the President was palpable. It makes me sick to my stomach.

Hey Terry! YOU SUCK!

Those who have children and are making minimum wage are already benefitting from not having to pay federal income tax. Are they teen-agers? Minimum wage is usually work force entry level, you advance and your pay increases. If they are just now starting to work, why do they already have children?
