Hollywood Legend Jane Russell Slams Abortion In Interview

LONDON, May 28, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The UK Life League, a British pro-life group has reported that Jane Russell, the 1940s and '50s Hollywood movie star and pin-up girl, now aged 82, gave an interview this week slamming abortion. "People should never, ever have an abortion. Don't talk to me about it being a woman's right to choose what she does with her own body. The choice is between life and death," said Russell.

Describing her shock at finding herself pregnant at 18: "The only solution was to find a quack and get an abortion. I had a botched abortion and it was terrible. Afterwards my own doctor said: 'What butcher did this to you?' I had to be taken to hospital. I was so ill I nearly died. I've never known pain like it." Russell says that due to the abortion she was not able to have any other children.

Listen, I believe your sentiments truly come from the heart. But honestly, you don't know me. I am not hurting. One single bit. Honestly. I am not in denial and I am not suppressing. I made my choice and that was that. My point of telling you all about this (and I knew what kind of posts would be coming at me) was to tell you that the argument that women will regret their decision later on in life is simply not true for many women. That's what I testified to. NOTHING ELSE. I am not defending abortion or any such thing. Just that this argument is not a good one to use as the reason to outlaw abortion. Heck, I'm trying to help YOU! I'm not going to say something or shed tears so people can justify their THOUGHTS about something they've never experienced themselves. However, I sure am lucky that so many of the pure ones here on Free Republic are praying for me!

As a grandmother of six and approaching my 70th birthday I too am acknowledging that I had an abortion at age 40. Was it an easy decision...no way....do I regret it....every day!! My OB at the time said he thought at my age I was facing too many problems to be having another child and I foolishly went along with it....this was a time when 40 yr old pregnant women were looked at as if to say "you still have sex?" I didn't know I was pregnant until I was about 12 weeks along and frankly I panicked.......the day of the abortion I came home from the hospital and went to bed awaking every few hours because I swore I heard a baby crying. A few times I actually got up to look for this baby..every so often I will hear someone talking about abortion as if it is a simple procedure and once you have it life goes on. Perhaps.....but not for all of us.
For those who accept abortion as a womans right I often wonder if they just dont' ackowledge that this fetus growing inside is actually a child....as for me even the "legality" of this abortion has not erased the fact I feel I murdered my child and I have lived with this guilt for 30 years. The tears fall often for this lost child of mine.............

Perhaps many of the women who do regret having an abortion, do not speak out, because they fear reprimand from those who are pro-life.

Grace is given to those who seek it. No matter what decisions we make in our youth, it is important that we all forgive ourselves. If this leads to anyone not being guilt-ridden, then this is a blessing.

Your post, #311, was one of the single most moronic statements ever made on this forum. I really mean that.

If we were to apply your logic to other historical situations, then we could say...

...the reason slavery continued until 1865 was because the abolitionists didn't really believe that those people who worked all day in chains were actually enslaved.

...the reason Jim Crow went on until the 1960's was because blacks didn't really think it was racism.

If abortion is murder why no punishment? The reason why is because the pro-lifers don't really believe it is a human being. Infanticide deserves equal punishment under the law. Equal crime deserves equal time.

Um, just wondering: Are you aware that the United States is not a dictatorship run by the National Right To Life Committee?

Abortion will never be made illegal.

Well, they said that about slavery and segregation, too.

Ouch. But nice use of the English language. And I can see, by this, what you really think of women.

,,, there's women - and there's women. It's all a matter of discerning quality. I had you pegged in that regard after your first couple of posts on this thread. Don't attempt to comdoditise your gender, it's a tiresome ploy.

,,, would you like it in crayon? You may know it as comoditize, but my spelling of it works fine outside the USA.

No I'm not. I've been very honest on this thread and I know I'm going to pay for it with lectures and reprimands and probably more. My point was that if the "majority" of women regretted it so much,

I think they are in denial if they don't consciously regret it. They receive their own reward within themselves, much like Romans 1:27 says about homosexual acts.

Didn't anyone ever tell you it was bad form to pick on people's typos? -- yet perhaps it is also the refuge of someone who can't support their point? Or hey, maybe that's exactly *why* it's bad form?

Hmm...

Those that had had multiple ones weren't so upset because they were pretty hardened to the experience

Maybe it's the naturally hard and unfeeling ones that don't even regret the first one.

How do you know "most women have regrets." In my experience, most women don't.

,,, drawing from your experience, how many women are you talking about?

I think it's that birds of a feather thing...

Nah just your imagination. In my experience women never get defensive about such things.

Well actually, that's chump change compared to what you've already lost.
