Hollywood Legend Jane Russell Slams Abortion In Interview

LONDON, May 28, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The UK Life League, a British pro-life group has reported that Jane Russell, the 1940s and '50s Hollywood movie star and pin-up girl, now aged 82, gave an interview this week slamming abortion. "People should never, ever have an abortion. Don't talk to me about it being a woman's right to choose what she does with her own body. The choice is between life and death," said Russell.

Describing her shock at finding herself pregnant at 18: "The only solution was to find a quack and get an abortion. I had a botched abortion and it was terrible. Afterwards my own doctor said: 'What butcher did this to you?' I had to be taken to hospital. I was so ill I nearly died. I've never known pain like it." Russell says that due to the abortion she was not able to have any other children.

"...'What butcher did this to you?'..."

Too bad that no one can ask the poor, unfortunate unborn child that question. One wonders what the answer would be.

Well, it was devastating enough that she didn't have another one, and that's the great object here, right?

It is apparent that your perception of abortion and the 'thing' being killed (you would grant that 'something' is being killed, right?) is flawed at the foundation of your reasoning. There is huge difference between an organ and an ORGANISM.

When people like you want to dehumanize the embryo or early fetus because one or more organs are not yet 'up and running to full capcity', you have erred in your reasoning by focusing on an organ or organs to define the organism. It is the organism that grows its own organs. The entire individual human being is present in the first cell of conception. The first cell division proves to a scientists that an individual life has begun expressing itself through growth and development. That individual ORGANISM will built its own placental capsule in which to live for nine months, it will build its own set of organs to sustain its own life support upon exiting the womb, it will mature its own sex cells (puberty) to propagate off-spring ... in short, the ORGANISM already exists before the organs you wish to make the focal point are even built because it is the alive ORGANISM that builds the organs.

You're wrong at the end. I do not "wish" anything. The only point I was making by telling my story (and an important one to those who fight against it) was to point out to the people on this thread that if they continually use the argument that women will regret having abortions...it won't work...that's not the alley they should continue to drive down. But that's not what anybody seemed to realize by my story. I am not "proud" I had an abortion. But I'm also don't agonize about it...and never did and I'm sure there are many others like me. I'm just being honest.

So her fear of POSSIBLE abuse is worse than DEFINITE murder.

here is another isssue I'm always curious aboout and would like to address. I regularly hear a pro-life person refer to abortion as "murder", "holocaust", "innocents being butchered alive". If this is such a horendous act of violence against innocent "people" why do many pro lifers propose that the procedure be banned with no murder charge for women? According to anti-abortion side it's the worst act of violence, the murder of innocent children. Wouldn't that deserve the death penalty? So a ban would be sufficient, kinda like banning Ephedra? Makes no sense and this is the kind of blaring inconsistency that makes roughly half of the U.S. not take the other side seriously.

But the truth is that there are just as many women who have no regret and I am one of them.

This has become quite a thread. I would complain about the abuse you've been taking, but I see that you are quite able to handle it.

I have just one question. Why do you have no regret? What were the circumstances that caused you to have no regret?

Interesting how that little veil thing plays with her eyes and softens her face.

BTW, decades ago one or both of my parents were in a group asked by a cousin of Jane's I think, to pray for her.

Abortion is abusing a child? I don't think so. How can an embryo or fetus with no body, head or brain be abused? A human being simply doesn't exist at that point.

Here is where we differ: I believe that every baby has a soul. Having a soul is what makes the baby human, not whether or the child's body is intact.

Women should not be forced to become a parent just because she has sex.

I agree, and women, becuase of their cycle, don't become parents every time they have sex. However, since that is the natural result of sex, both partners should be prepared to become parents. Just becuase things "didn't go as planned" doesn't mean that you can kill a child.

There is a huge difference between not allowing a pregnancy to continue (no baby has been "come to be" yet) and killing created born children or jews.

Why? At what point do they become "too valuable to kill?" When would you say that they "come to be"? When they first kick? When you can see the head? When they are born?

That's assuming having an abortion is always a bad decision.

Murder is always a bad decision.

Not having children is a great decision for a lot of people, that is why people use contraception. Abortion is last chance birth control that is sometimes necessary due to bad decisions or bad circumstances that are out of persons control.

Well, the mother brought those circumstances apon herself. If she is unable to raise the child, she should put the child up for adoption. If she just doesn't want to deal with the actual pregnancy, she needs to realize that that is a risk she took a while back. Not having sex is definitely in a person's control. If you are talking about rape, I would still say no abortion. (And realize that I am not unsensitive to these women. One of my family members was raped, so I know how terrible it is.) But just because you were terribly wronged, doesn't give you the right to hurt another person.

It's not like they go through abortion procedures for fun.

I didn't say that it was fun.

It isn't practical considering all the effective contraceptive choices available.

There are a lot of other choices out there, but women need to accept that they could become pregnant AND THAT THAT BABY WILL THEN BE THEIR RESPONSIBILTY!

I really don't understand how deciding to not have a baby automatically makes it a bad decision. People do it everyday it's calling planning family size.

Planning family size is different than killing a baby.

A fetus or embryo never MUST become a baby. If you don't want a baby why should you create one by growing one in a womb? She wasn't ready to go through pregnancy or be a mother at the time so why should she?

Well, if she wasn't ready to be a mon, she shouldn't have had sex. She must realize that she is ultimately the one who is responsible for her actions.

Supposedly, Lucille Ball had an out-of-wedlock son in New York during her high school years.

No, not Lucy! Before I believe it, do you have a link for that?

I tried to do a search, and couldn't find it. I did find out that Milton Berle had an out-of-wedlock child with a vaudevillian.

And who is Porfirio Rubirosa? His name keeps coming up again & again & again -- countless times. The guy sure got around, whoever he is.

When I say I have no regrets, what I am saying is that I am not traumatized ... don't have any "post-traumatic stress disorder." Nothing. I have never thought about what might have been, I never think about it. This, apparently, makes me a monster. And I understand how some people believe that. If you read the article that started this thread, you'd know that this was about women who regret, later in life, having an abortion. My point was that there are many women who don't regret it. They're the ones you never hear from. I don't believe this is the argument to use against abortion.

How can an embryo or fetus with no body, head or brain be abused? A human being simply doesn't exist at that point.

You are woefully ignorant of the facts of life. A fetus has a body, it has a head, it has a brain, it has a heart, it has arms and legs, it has eyes, it has a nose, it has lips -- it has EVERYTHING -- just in smaller size.

Brain waves can be recorded (not sure at what week).
A heartbeat can be recorded (again, not sure at what week).
The fetus will suck its thumb.
The fetus will kick.
The fetus will shift position.
etc.

I can't believe there are people who are this ignorant in the year 2003.

Better get a pregnancy book -- and fast! -- to find out all the stages of life from conception through birth.

Oh, and it's a human being! What did you think it was -- a carrot?

I'm sad that you're not ashamed you had an innocent baby murdered, ripped from your own body because you didn't want it. You can't be human inside if you can allow that to happen without any regret. You have no soul.

Why do DU shills come over here, paint themselves as evil monsters, then laugh when we tear them a new one? What is your particular mental problem? Are you that bored? Too much time on your hands to sit around and cause trouble? Grow up little girl, you are probably some dumb 19 yr old in a pop psych class, trying to get reactions from people by saying something shocking. If your story isn't true, you're a liar, if your story is true, you're a heartless monster, end of story.
