Good article. The school taxes where I am buying a house are going from a tax rate of ~$17.25 per $1000 AV to ~$21.00. For a home with an AV of $100K, that an additional $375 per year, or around ~$30 per month.
Homeowners will not be able to sustain another 3-5 years of that.

It was widely known when Pataki vetoed the city tax increase that he did so in the expectation of being overridden. That was part of the deal. He didn't want to take the political heat. But his angry Republican colleagues will stick it to him anyway and make sure he gets his share of the blame.

Any way we can change the site of the Republican Convention? Who in the party decided to have it here?
To: Fury
Ouch, that's a painful tax bite. I though I had it bad at $11.90/$1000 assessed value.

I don't understand the problem. Can't they just add another $100 to the tax on each pack of cigarettes?

Are there any conservative Republicans in New York in office? I don't know many (Bloomberg, Pataki, Peter King) are RINOs. Even Guiliani and Rick Lazio are moderates at best.
At some point you have to question New York voters. Those guys didn't seize office in a coup.

Oops,
I don't know many (Bloomberg, Pataki, Peter King), but those I do are RINOs.

New York voters get what they deserve. They keep electing these clowns.
The article failed to mention the Conservative Party. Way back when it was a party that frequently fought the Republicans. Today it's a patronage party and fast going the way of the Liberals.

Just curious; is it true the NY GOP got a patent on the "bullseye tennis shoe"?

My only dissent from this article is I think there does need to be some kind of safety net for children's health insurance. It is may be much cheaper than visiting emergency rooms at every ear ache. I'm amazed at the number of children that cannot qualify for health insurance. Not every child has a working parent who qualifies for family health insurance plans.

For the life of me, I can't remember the name of the young lady I was arguing with over Bloomberg back then. I said that regardless of electability, he was suicide for NY Republicans. I said generally I say go with the Republican even if it means holding your nose, but in his case no way.
Wish I could remember...

I hope that nationally, the republicans don't follow this same trend to the same degree the NY GOP has done--beating the dems only by becoming milder versions of them. There is a post on this forum today about how this was discussed on Rush Limbaugh this AM

Bloomberg was a registered Democrat until he decided to switch to Republican for the election. Don't for a minute believe his policies are anything but pure Democrap.

would Mark Green have fired 2000 teachers aides? Don't get me wrong, Bloomberg is setting him ablaze like nothing I have ever seen, but Green would have been much worse. Endless fines, surcharges, etc. Wouldn't it have been better for him to layoff an additional 10,000 city employees (out of 253,000), take the hit in the media for 2 weeks, and then move on with a sane policy. His advisors must be total idiots.
To: eeman
in some states, its the correct policy. would you rather have had Pataki as a Senator, or Hillary or Schumer? Would you rather have Boxer/Feinstein, or Riordan?

How dare the author accuse Bloomberg of being a Republican!
To: Arkie2
I guess my question is whether conservative Republicans can get elected in New York. My guess is that they can't, although I don't really remember anyone trying.

It was my experience with the RINOs who turned Nassau County into the most corrupt political machine after Chicago's that put me off from registering as a Republican initially.
