I understand your feeling but the two issues that are very dear to the evangelical base. The first is abortion (known as legalized murder). The second is the nation of Israel being God's covenant land. The evangelical base is very black and white on moral issues and if Bush sells Israel out, there will be a lot of evangelicals staying home in '04. If the Democrats figure it out, opposing the President on the Roadmap is a political winner.

Bush is very frightened now and is worried about his re-election.BS.

I really think that long-term peace will require a grass-roots effort by the Palestinians--not the Palestinian Authority's doing, but just ol' Mohammed Assam and Ibrahim Sayyid down at the local coffee shop--to hunt down and kill the terrorists and the a$$holes egging them on, particularly the latter group.
Maybe it'll take some PO'd fathers who now have no heirs because some smooth-talking cretin sold their kids on the idea of martyrdom and 72 virgins.
Once this starts happening and gaining some traction with the rest of the Palestinians, their government will either adapt to the new reality or be replaced by someone who can.

I thought the downfall of President George Bush I was his decision to wage a political war against Israel on behalf of his Islamic friends. I remember it well.
I pray his son does not follow that path.

Agreed. If you want my opinion, there is only one way that will happen, and that is if the Palestinians are staring serious consequences in the face.

The Road Map is based on UN Resolution 242, which says that all Arab belligerency must end, Israel and the Arabs are then to come together and determine new borders for Israel since here 1967 borders are indefensable, and finally, make room for a Palestinian state.
Well... the Road Map doesn't seem to hold the Arab's accountable to their end of the bargain. The stop of all belligerency. Until that happens, I don't think the Road Map should go forward.
But we do owe it to the peace process to find out just who is Abu Mazen and what he is willing to do inside the territories (with the terror and Arafat) to bring about peace.
Can there be peace in the region? Not as long as one side is bent on war. And the Palestinians would have a lot to prove to me (if I were President) that they are now for peace.... years of proof.

Bingo. Soon to be followed by, "If he keeps pushing this roadmap, I am going to stay home, or vote 3rd party, or tearfully run in circles screamin' and hollerin'..."
To: Howlin
And your evidence is?
The big push for the roadmap came right after the Riyadh and Casablanca suicide attacks, when reports came of terror warnings in the US and the threat level was raised. The main concern is that Al Queda has a summer terror campaign planned and the primary consideration of the Bush Administration would be to thwart any attacks.
Since the Democrats are pounding Bush about homeland security and any attack in the US would be pounced upon as evidence of Bush's security failures, the Bush Administration panicked. To gain the cooperation of Arab governments, they pushed Israel down the stairs.
I have at least provided some explanation for my contentions. Where are yours?

Agreed. This road map is a win-win for Israel.
If the Palestinians prove they are willing to live in peace, then peace reigns. If not, Israel will have a very free hand to do what it must do.

I personally think that Bush panicked after the Riyahd bombings. Yeah, that is so like his character to panic. < / sarc > When has Bush ever panicked? The guy survived 11-12/00, cool as a cucumber the whole time. And your theory seems to forget that long before the bombing Bush was preparing and pushing the roadmap, and had set a Palestinian state as a goal.
To: LarryM
Where have you been? The Road-Map was pushed before the start of the Iraq War. It has nothing to do with the Riyadh and Casablanca suicide attacks.

The big push for the roadmap came right after the Riyadh and Casablanca suicide attacksPerhaps you should try to stay current with the news. This has been planned all along; you may not have realized it since there was a war going on. Bush said in the very beginning when Arafat apppointed a prime minister, the process would move forward. He did; we're moving.
Your reasoning is faulty, but I suspect that it's contorted to fit your agenda here.
This statement:
To gain the cooperation of Arab governments, they pushed Israel down the stairs
is just a blatant lie. Nothing of the sort has happened.

I'm not talking about the Arab street... and bulldozers aren't the answer. No, as the anti-war movement has demonstrated,
War never solved anything. We told the Palestinians that if they would create a prime minister's position, we would go forward. Well, they did it.
Well, that's that then, on to Iran.
I have been very clear by saying that I have seen good things from Mazen...
What exactly have you seen ? All I've seen are more innocent Jewish victims. I don't doubt there are innocent Arab victims as well. After all there were innocent Afghans and Iraqis, right ?
Are they the things that can bring about a "partner in peace?" The jury is still out on that. So, let's go to Jordan and find out.
By all means, which division is going ?
You say, "let the Palestinian people decide." I agree. Yet, the reality is that the Palestinian people may not be in any condition to decide.
Neither are the Democrats but we let them vote.
I don't think I would equate Arafat to Mick Jagger. I think the psychology is a litte difference as is the stage.
What is a simile ?
Your sarcasm is lost on me. It is neither witty nor very good.
Sorry, no refunds
Your answer seems to be pave over the Middle East. Conducting a tour of American strength will play in certain capitals of the Middle East but not in certain caves in the Middle East.
After September 11th, I don't much care for your approach. Hit them hard. Then hit them again. Accept the help of the willing and the surrender of the rest.
The rest of your answer is inane. One does not have to do with the other. This isn't Washington politics.
In one respect you are correct. It extends far beyond Washington politics. Yet it is still politics, "the art or science of government or governing, especially the governing of a political entity, such as a nation, and the administration and control of its internal and external affairs."

Where are you getting this stuff??? Where are you getting some facts or reports on this?? There is not and will not be a strike on Jerusalem, the whole world KNOWS we WON"T allow it!! If they don't, they will soon. There is a conspiracy among the heathen. Don't you know your Bible ? Or is it not yours ?
To: Howlin
You can deny whatever you want.
The road map was slated to die on its own before the recent bombings. The big push, including summits with terrorist leaders, came after the bombings. From what I understand, Powell and Rice were the ones behind this latest shift.
Last June, Bush promised to only deal with a Palestinian leadership untainted by terror. Instead he caved on that one and is now going to meet with Arafat's deputy of 40 years (who financed the 1972 Munich massacre).
Back in September-October 2001, when Bush was trying to get Saudi cooperation to use their bases against Afghanistan, he first broached the Palestinian State idea to appease the Saudis. Sharon warned him against another Munich and the Saudis blew Bush off anyway.
What we have now is a delayed Munich, with Bush in the role of Chamberlain. The reasoning I see here on this board is probably not much different than that found in the British papers after Chamberlain returned from Munich (Peace in our Time).
What did Marx say? History repeats itself, first as tragedy and then as farce. Well now we have the Munich farce. I was hoping that Bush would step away from this, but the WH has confirmed the summit.

Don't insult...The Bible also says that Israel will be protected. Forget that part???

The road map was slated to die on its own before the recent bombings. For starters, how about some PROOF to back that up.
And not just YOUR opinion. You posted it; let's have a link.

I have NEVER heard that the road map was going to die...NEVER, Bush has ALWAYS said that there was going to be 2 states. I think he is going to go over there and lay down the law. He is going to tell them enough is enough. 50 years of fighting and killing has done nothing, it is time to try something new.
