Members of the Board of Governors of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, students and bereaved families dedicated a monument on Monday in memory of nine students and staff killed in a bomb attack a year ago at the Mount Scopus campus.
The 'live' sculpture created by Ran Morin and called the "Tilted Tree," consists of a tree planted at an angle to appear as though its life has been disrupted, though not halted by the attack last July 31 at the Frank Sinatra Student Center.
"This tree, whose roots were shaken, will continue to grow, will continue to bear fruit," the university's president, Prof. Menachem Magidor, told those assembled, including members of the 66th Board of Governors who are in Jerusalem for their annual meeting.
The names of the nine victims are engraved in the sculpture, which has been placed in the Nancy Reagan Plaza, opposite the site of the bombing.
Those killed in the attack were: Marla Bennett, 24, from San Diego, Benjamin Blutstein, 25, from Harrisburg, PA, Dina Carter, 38, from North Carolina, Janis Ruth Coulter, 37, of Boston, David Gritz, 24, from Paris, and Israelis David (Diego) Ladowski, 29, Levina Shapira, Dafna Spruch and Revital Barashi.
