Fire hero in lockup on charge of assault

Kris Leija, the hero/suspect of last month’s 21/21 Apartments fire, made a return trip Friday night to what is fast becoming his second home: the Taylor County Jail.

Leija, 23, made national news in late April after rescuing four children from the blazing apartment complex at 2121 N. 6th St., which ultimately burned to the ground. Less than a week later, he was named as a suspect in the fire.

Friday’s 10:10 p.m. arrest came as the result of a fight between Leija and his 15-year-old brother, Abilene police Sgt. Scott Rowley said.

According to the incident report, Leija hit his brother in the chest with a shovel. The brother, whose name was not released because of his age, was taken to Hendrick Medical Center with injuries that did not appear to be life threatening, Rowley said.

"Without an X-ray, I don’t know, but what was seen at the scene did not appear to be that substantial," he said.

Hendrick had no record of anyone being admitted at that time Friday night, with injuries consistent with being hit with a shovel.

Leija was arrested approximately 30 minutes later to prevent further family violence, according to the report.

Calls to his mother’s home, where Leija lives, were not answered Sunday.

Leija remained in jail Sunday night in lieu of $10,000 bail, on a charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.

On April 28, one day after the apartment complex fire, Leija was arrested for probation violation, immediately following a press conference honoring his bravery. He was on probation for burglary of Abilene High School last July.

His arrest drew the ire of those across the country to local law enforcement officials. On April 30, Abilene Fire Department investigators fingered him as a suspect in that fire.

"I let a lot of people down. I’m sorry for them finding out I was a probation violator," Leija said. "If he (the judge) gives me another chance, I really want to better my life. Behind bars, there’s no life."

"Behind bars, there’s no life."

Sure there is. Just learn Morse Code and tap out "LeRoy", or "Bubba" with your soap on a rope.

His arrest drew the ire of those across the country to local law enforcement officials.

If I remember correctly, there were quite a few around here typing out "No good deed goes unpunished" and similar comments, as though his actions that night somehow wiped clean his entire past.
