My Leo is a hero

I know alot of people have no room in their heart for Police Officer's and in a strange way, I understand that sometimes but before anyone makes a final judgement on all police officer's, please allow me to tell you my side of this debate.
I have been married to a police officer for twelve years....some good and some bad. He has seen some of the most tragic and de-humanizing sides of people and he has seen the best as well. He is the kind of police officer to stop at the house of a lonely elderly man who just lost his wife. He is the kind of police officer who will take the time to fix the mailbox for a family who can't afford to get it fixed for themselves....of course, he does this on his own time and with his own money.
He is the kind of police officer who cried at the drowning of a two year old little girl. This happened while I was pregnant with our son and to this day, he refuses to get a swimming pool. He is the kind of police officer who will drive a man to a hospital where his wife is fighting for her life and it doesn't matter how long it takes or how long he has to wait.
He is an excellent father to his son, he is an excellent husband to me and there isn't anything he wouldn't do for his entire family. His father is disabled and whenever he needs my hero, he is there.
My husband has been called just about every bad word you could think of......his patience has been put to the test.....and yet, he has this quality about him of never letting his anger get the best of him. His ability to stay in control in some of the worst circumstances is mind blowing and the respect he has of his junior officers is well known.
Am I biased? You damn right I am....police officer's don't get good quality press time. In fact, the only time cops get press time is when something has gone wrong. The press isn't interested in the truth about police officers....it's better stories for them! Al Sharpton and his cronies are the first to appear in front of a camera when a black person is killed at the hands of police officers and they aren't interested in the whole truth. It doesn't matter to them! Look at Tawana Brawley, this happened in my own back yard and the lives he ruined are just casualties in his quest for top black leader!
So, when you accuse all cops of being looters, murderers and whatever else you can come up with, please have the common courtesy of knowing all of the facts before you make final judgements. That is my hero you are talking about!!!

As the daughter of a police officer and the wife of a firefighter, I've gone through life hearing the good and the bad about our civil servants. Sometimes comments were made directly at me in order to rile me. I learned long ago that the best one can do is keep your head held high. It's not always easy to let things roll off your back, but it's necessary in order to maintain the pride that you have in your brave loved ones. No one can take that away from you! God bless all our civil servants and their families!

Your concise definition of the source of laws was excellent. To ask officers to enforce the 'in mala prohibita' laws invites the situation we are now in.
Your post defines the crux of the problem - that which officers have been tasked to do as compared with what they should be doing.
Thanks for the defining definitions.

Good post! I also have been a cop (patrol officer)for the past 12 years and you are right on the money...bad press/ appreciated rarely. Being a new freeper....it's great to see support here. Over the past 12 years things have changed so much. When I started in 91, (right before the Rodney King incident) we were generally viwed as the good guys. But now we are "generally" veiwed as the bad guys. It seems that the only people that like the police are family, close friends, and elementary age kids. I say generally because they are always good people, like the people on this site that support the police. I've learned to except it. I'm still pretty young and have at least 20 years left until I retire. Arpege92- kudos to you for being a cop's wife (very hard job) and to your husband for being a warrior. And thank you to all of the freepers who support us.

The reason cops take the heat on the WoD is that cop unions have a strong influnce on laws and enforcement priorities. If cops and their unions were working against abominations like the WoD and its handmaidens, like the harrassment of gun owners during the Maryland sniper incident, cops would get all cheers from me.

I saw the thread you're talking about. Servant of Nine started it. It don't know him that well, at first I thought he was a statist disruptor when he was talking about the jury verdict that was overturned by a Liberal Judge. Then he posts this on FR. In a way he's right that we should be able to defend ourselves from unlawful searches, but then again I've seen his previous posts and wonder about his real intentions.
He seems to tell us that on the one hand we should strictly follow the law (Judges), but then on the other we should resist with controlled violence if necessary.
I think he just hates cops. Probably a dope smoker.

There is a simple recipe for respect:
Keep costs under control.
Keep effectiveness up: Make sure the solution rates for crimes that are meaningful to middle class Freepers are at historic norms. In some cities, the murder (!!!) solution rate has fallen to below 50%, rape also under 50%, burglary almost zilch, robbery under 15%. That's NOT GOOD, especially if costs keep going up.
Keep your priorities straight. Revenue from tickets just to keep more cops on the job is NOT a priority. Push constitutionally dubious laws to the bottom of the list.

Bump for you...not to pollute the thread, but to show you I'm not talking about you behind your back ;)

If no-knock raids (another Nixon-era invention almost as good as the EPA) were limited to true emergencies, like hostage rescues, there would be no dead heart attack (wrong address) victims because cops use stun grenades.

I agree. I think the problem with these sorts of cops is that they are former soldiers or marines that have left the military for some reason or another and landed a good civil servant position. The problem is that they have not been trained to be peace officers, but are trained killers. We need folks like this, but maybe we should have a mandatory wait time of 5 yrs or so before they can apply to be peace officers.

If cops and their unions were working against abominations like the WoD Cop haters are often driven by a desire for legalized dope,

I'm glad I wasn't the only one to notice. Arpege92 was being overwhelmed by dope smokers in the thread she mentioned. So9 is talking out of both sides of his mouth when it comes to the law. I'm sure he will be on this thread as soon as he puts down his roach clip and turns off the Jethro Tull tunes.

Beautiful.
Only those with no respect for authority are not thankful to those men and women who wear the shield and put their lives on the line daily protecting us from those who have no respect for authority.

It's amusing to find Constitution-bending trolls like yourself on this forum. Typical liberal, personal attacks while the real argument, Liberty, goes right over your head.

Constitution-bending That what the dopers do when they claim they have a "Constitutional" right to smoke dope and shoot cops.

I'm pinging my bud, the breakfast captain, to this thread.
He's a law enforcement veteran, and will no doubt have a contribution, after his shift.

Oh, please. Roscoe's a little, um, overbearing but keep your Catholic bashing to yourself.
