Despite his expression of support for the road mapn, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is opposed to convening a U.S.-led international Mideast summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, that would include representatives from Europe and the United Nations to promote the road map, sources in Jerusalem indicated Saturday night.
The prime minister may, however, agree to participate in a smaller forum including only representatives from the U.S., Israel, the Palestinians, Jordan and Egypt, the sources said.
Washington sources confirmed Saturday that the Bush administration is considering holding a summit of Mideast countries on June 4 at the Egyptian resort city to give a boost to the road map. The White House has not issued a formal announcement about the summit or indicated which parties would be invited to attend.
Sharon expressed support for the road map on Friday after the White House issued a statement promising to "fully and seriously" address Israel's "real concerns" about the plan.
How does that go? Thou shalt not tempt the Lord Thy God?
