STAMFORD-A man was being held by immigration authorities after patrons at a busy downtown restaurant said they saw him park illegally and quickly walk away, police said.
The restaurant and an adjacent office building were evacuated Thursday evening. A search of the car turned up aviation-related documents including flight charts, schematics of airport terminals and runways and information on flight lessons, said police Capt. Richard Conklin.
The Joint Terrorism Task Force, comprised of the FBI and other federal and state agencies, planned to question the man, Conklin said Friday.
"The aviation materials piqued our interest," Conklin said. "He claims a friend of his was taking these flying lessons."
The man-identified by Conklin as Noor Wali, approximately 43, of Stamford-was detained in Hartford by immigratioon authoorities. He has noot been charged in Stamford with anything other than illegal parking, Coonklin said.
Mike Gilhooly, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, would say only that the man-whom he would not identify-was being held because he was in the country illegaly. Conklin said the man pulled behind the restaurant at abooout 6:45 p.m. and got out of the vehicle "very abruptly." He said the man parked in an "obvious no parking area" and left on the run.
The man's actions prompted residents to call the police.

Especially worrying since the new tapes call for more 911 type events.

Very interesting.
It's good that people are on alert and report these things, and that the police takes them seriously.

Who knows? Is Wali still being held? The article leaves a lot of questions.

Yes, I agree this is good. But there had to be something more to it then this. I can guarantee you that tonight in NYC, a whole bunch of ME guys parked their cars illegally and walked away quickly. And if I had seen one of them and called the police with only that information, they would have laughed in my face. This guy must have been on the watch list. Lets hope they can get him to Gitmo for questioning. We really need that "torture warrant" that Alan Dershowitz was talking about for cases like this.

I guess the Police Cheif hasn't been "corrected" yet.

I'm wondering how long the ACLU will wait to look for a way to make money off of this. (I think most of them are shameless bums of Government progams or ungrateful professors at taxpayers expenses.)

why? you will never hear a word of followup on this story, or the other story tonight about the Boeing plant being monitored by middle easterners who seemingly were not challenged, caught or questioned.

Wow - I grew up in Stamford. I wonder what restaurant...
