One of the most revealing things was my girlfriend's discussions of the low SAT scores and GPAs of her Asian friends. She is an excellent student, but is not really the stereotype.
It definitely is culture, because some children of immigrants do better than others depending on where they settle(ie. Vietnamese in Seattle don't seem to excel at the same level that they might elsewhere or in comparison to the second-generation Koreans here)
