Multimillionaire Robert Beale has a beef with the Minnesota Revenue Department. He wants the state to return his 30-room North Oaks house, two Audis and 41 guns, along with his wife's grandmother's silver tea set.
The state's tax collector seized those assets last month for what it says is nonpayment of about $800,000 in capital gains taxes, penalties and interest. The taxes stem from Beale's sale in 1998 of his interest in KLGT-23, a local television station.
Beale says that at the time of the sale as well as now he was a resident of Naples, Fla., and Minnesota can't impose capital gains taxes on a Florida resident. (Florida does not tax its residents' capital gains.)
Beale said he kept detailed records of his time in Minnesota and did not spend enough days in the state to be considered a resident.
