When they shot a light pulse into the cloud, it bogged down, slowed dramatically, eventually stopped, and turned off.

How'd they know where the photon was? Did it glow? (maybe a stupid question). Also, how could they tell the "stopped" light photon was really there, rather than its energy having been absorbed by the atoms? Is it that it continued in the same direction once restarted?

Instead of bouncing off each other like bumper cars, the atoms join together and function as one entity.
