EVERETT - A television and movie actor who formerly lived in Mukilteo was charged today in Snohomish County with second-degree rape of a child accused of having sex in 1998 with a then-12-year-old relative of his wife. 33-year-old Scott Hamilton Bairstow now lives in Los Angeles. Charging documents allege that Bairstow had sex with the girl three more times outside Washington.
Mukilteo police reportedly obtained a court-authorized order to tape-record a telephone conversation this month between Bairstow and the girl.
During the conversation, the girl allegedly told him she was considering telling somebody about the sexual intercourse. He allegedly replied that if she did, he could be thrown into jail and have his career ruined.
Bairstow has appeared in feature films including "Tuck Everlasting" and "New Best Friend." His television roles included appearances in such shows as "Party of Five" and "Touched by an Angel."

No problem, I was just thinking that the law of 308 or proposition 223 would probably suffice in either case for such a depraved individual, particularly if it had been my daughter.
To: Theodore R.
Yea ... how tragic for the girl. Nothing tragic about this bozo though ... just depraved it would appear.

I'm trying to figure out the implications of your remarks.
Should we allow people like this to have sexual relations with 12 year olds then? Just sweet talk them into it? or should they be allowed to take them by force? Would there be parental consent?
I have news for you, not my 12 year old ... anyone trying it by either force or fraud or sweet talk or whatever reason is apt to find out what cranial ventilation is all about.
Just IMHO of course.

"Under our law, are all the spawn of hundreds of generations of rapist grandfathers."
You totally lost me here. What are you talking about?

I'm not familiar with the law/proposition you state, but, if it's good enough for you..
.. I'm damned sure I would agree with you.
To: Jeff Head
You are kinder than I would be.

As in caliber .308 and caliber .223.
To: Travis McGee
If I am mot mistaken, my way would probably achieve the same result as yours ... perhaps a bit sooner though, eh?
In either case, I know he'd never do it again.

As in caliber .308 and caliber .223.Got it! Yes!!!

Actually, he played God...not Jesus.
He also played a guy with healing (laying hands on) type powers in an episode of the X-Files.

"I think in this episode the 12 year old was playing the Virgin Mary and Bairstow was playing The Lord. In our day and age, the conception of Christ would be a crime."
I think you've laid out his defense strategery there Paladin.
To: FrogFish
Actually, he played God...not Jesus. I didn't watch it. But since he was a carpenter of sorts (my wife told me about), well...
But then, God and Jesus are one. So I'm okay with that too.

I don't disagree. I just point this out because we're trying 12 and thirteen year olds as adults when they kill and saying they had the capacity to make a decision they were responsible for. On the other hand, we are saying that all young teenagers, even boys, can't make a decision about their body. I agree that they should be protected by the law even when they are willing. On the other hand, I remember being seventeen and finding myself very attracted to some fourteen year olds. As it turned out, they were unwilling. So I didn't have the opportunity to get in trouble. I also remember being fifteen and wishing I could get lucky with my spanish teacher. I wouldn't have wanted her to go to jail. The prospect might have guaranteed me no chance at all. I guess I'm just saying that there are degrees of rape and the present law makes no distinction.

I'm just saying that many of our grandmothers were under 18 and some of our grandfathers weren't. Current law puts many of our grandfathers in a bad light as well as casts our existance in an undesirable light even though our grandmothers may disagree.

At least he'll get his own "Best New Friend".

Hmm. Let me digest that for awhile. I do think there's a difference between a boy and girl who are a couple years apart, and a 20-something adult male with a very young girl. Not sure if I can intellectually explain it so I won't try, it just hits my "creep" meter.
Since you brought it up to someone else, I have a problem with 12 and 13 year olds being tried as adults. I would prefer the punishments in the juvenile justice system be stronger so the little snots didn't get their hands slapped for killing someone.
