Nadeau, 32, continues a rehabilitation program at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center that includes physical, recreational, and occupational and speech therapy.
The Danbury, Conn., veteran suffered a moderate to severe head injury, a fractured left scapula (shoulder blade) and injuries to his left-side lung and ribs on May 2 when his car spun and hit the Turn 1 wall during a practice session at RIR.
Doctors at VCU Medical Center said Nadeau has shown rapid progress this week, is medically stable and is not in a situation where it is necessary to classify his general condition.
Jay Frye, general manager of MB2 Motorsports, visited Nadeau on Tuesday and was amazed with the progress of his driver, whom he had visited a week before.
"The difference since the last time I saw Jerry was incredible," Frye said. "He is more responsive, more alert and following commands with more consistency. It was an emotional and wonderful feeling when he made the first move to shake my hand.
Nadeau conscious, speaking as he recovers from crash
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Winston Cup driver Jerry Nadeau has regained consciousness and is speaking again, nearly three weeks after he crashed during practice at Richmond International Raceway.
Jay Frye, general manager of Nadeau's U.S. Army team, visited the driver Tuesday at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. Nadeau had been semiconscious in previous visits.
``The difference since the last time I saw Jerry was incredible,'' Frye said Thursday. ``It was an emotional and wonderful feeling when he made the first move to shake my hand. Yesterday he was hugging and kissing his daughter (3-month-old Natalie Kate) and had pizza for dinner.''
The 32-year-old driver was critically injured May 2 when his car slammed driver's side first into the wall. He was upgraded to fair condition May 8 but regained full consciousness only this week.
Nadeau sustained head, lung, rib and shoulder injuries and is having physical rehabilitation and speech therapy, team spokesman Dave Ferroni said. Nadeau will return to North Carolina to continue rehabilitation but no timetable has been set.
``It is really remarkable to see how far he has come,'' Frye said.

Don't miss the Sunday Coca-Cola 600 at 2pm PT / 5pm ET from Lowe's ... 400 lapper.. wheww!
From NASCAR.com
A steady day-long downpour forced NASCAR to postpone tonight's Bud Pole Qualifying until Friday afternoon. Qualifying for the Coca-Cola 600 is now set for 1 p.m. ET, immediately followed by Busch Series Bud Pole Qualifying
Sunday looks to be OK weather-wise.
I'm heading down there tomorrow for five great days. JR's, Carolina style BBQ, Cheerwine, and NASCAR - it doesn't get much better than that.
