WASHINGTON - Former New Jersey Gov. Christie Whitman is stepping down after 21/2 tumultuous years running the Environmental Protection Agency, saying family concerns - not political differences with President Bush - convinced her that it was time to go.

Though often savaged by environmental groups for not standing up to the president on air and water reforms, Whitman told reporters that she remains close to Bush and believes that she leaves the environment better protected than when she took the helm of the EPA in January 2001.

"I think she deserves to be known as the open space governor..."

Unfortunately, the only "open space" is between her ears.

".....a moderate former governor...."

Liberal newspeak for a RINO.

"Bush called her "a trusted friend and adviser..."

I hope he's just mouthing pious platitudes. Chrissie is an elitist limousine liberal, a "Rockefeller Republican" and a perfect example of why Republicna philosophies can never be implemented in the Garden State - too many rich liberals like her in the Republican Party there who care only for protecting their tax dollars, while practising extreme social liberalism - she gave New Jersey Deborah Poritz, Deborah Poritz gave the Nation - FRANK LAUTENBERG!!!

That just might happen. Do you think the Senate democrats won't fillibuster the replacement unless Dubya totally caves on the next appointee? I think that unless he appoints Rachel Carlson herself they'll be against it.

I never like her because she couldn't possibly care about life of any kind. She vetoed! a ban on "partial birth abortion". (pre-separation homicide)

What she did is great for environmentalists and Democrats wanting to be President. When someone is nominated to take her place, that person is going to give opponents a chance to roll the administration over the coals on environmental issues and build a following an audience.
