I just don't understand the appeal of these made for TV "talent" contests.

Prior to this seasons American Idol I would have agreed with you. I started watching just for laughs, but was hooked immediately. I haven't looked forward to a TV show this much since Dallas.

A trio from my home town got to perform on that show. I can remember there were told to wear pink shirts and burgundy blazers because that filmed the best for black and white TV. Our whole town was excited for these kids. I guess they didn't win anything; because I don't remember the results.
