Bull Durham stars give to food bank
COOPERSTOWN - Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins and Ron Shelton, the co-stars and director of the film "Bull Durham," have each contributed $1,000 to the Cooperstown Food Bank
The checks, which arrived Wednesday, followed an earlier $377 check, sent to the food bank through the efforts of the "Bull Durham" crew.
The $377 was contributed by people who attended a 15th anniversary screening of "Bull Durham" last month at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
During that screening, Robbins passed a hat to collect money for the food bank.
Ellen St. John, food bank director, said Wednesday afternoon she was pleased with, and grateful for, the "generous donation.
"I'm having a hard time putting my gratitude into words, but I want to write to each of them," she said,
St. John said the money is needed to help fund the busy food bank, which last year provided nearly 40,000 meals for local residents.
"With the economy the way it is, I worry about what will happen in the next year or so," she said. "There are a lot of people who need help."
Robbins, Sarandon and Shelton had been scheduled to appear at the National Baseball Hall of Fame on April 25-26 in a forum commemorating Bull Durham's anniversary. However, Hall of Fame President Dale Petroskey canceled the event, asking Sarandon and Robbins not to appear because of their outspoken opposition to the war in Iraq.
Petroskey's letter to Robbins, which included the sentence: "We believe your very public criticism of President Bush at this important and sensitive time in our nation's history helps undermine the U.S. position, which ultimately could put our troops in even more danger," was made public.
Robbins responded by saying he didn't think baseball was a Republican sport and has since discussed his views on war and peace in several forums.
Petroskey has apologized for not talking to Robbins and Sarandon before canceling the forum.
The food bank, situated in an annex to the Presbyterian Church on Church Street, is open from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

A thousand bucks each. Gee, I hope they can afford it. And, these are the type people telling us that we can't afford a tax refund.

This is the greatest act of philanthropy the world has ever seen.
Thank goodness it's also the most well-publicized.

And they had to make it known in public ?? Much like the Pharisee in the Bible, eh?? Should we not give our alms in private so that only God knows???

Oooooh. A thousand bucks a piece. I'll bet that must have put a real dent in their net worth....NOT!
Why only a thousand? If I had their kind of bookoo bucks, I'd be handing out $1000 bills all day long.

How insensitive of you to assume that this financially challenged person needed your charity. What with all the government assistance available, Im sure he is doing fine and is embarrassed that he had to actually face the person giving him a hand out without the govt. mediator.

LOCAL OPINION ON THIS MATTER
Jeers for Star's differing coverage
Let me get this straight: Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon say they will donate an undisclosed amount to the Cooperstown Food Bank with no personal effort on their part and get above-the-fold, front-page coverage. The American Cancer Society Relay for Life raised more than $100,000 through the efforts of 56 teams walking 18 hours straight and only got on the third page. I suppose one must be a crybaby liberal to get any positive coverage in your paper. Why didn't the Relay for Life at least get "On the Bright Side" front-page coverage?
The "Cheers" to Robbins and Sarandon for their donation was no surprise. A true investigative newspaper would have attempted to call the couple and ask if this didn't represent a brazen effort on the part of their agents to get free publicity. Why didn't you ask how much these rich movie stars are actually planning to give? I also see that you didn't miss a chance to put the issue of Dale Petroskey's brave decision in the article. I say Jeers to The Daily Star.

Maybe they should go in and get married instead of setting a horrible example for their children.

These people are just so damned CHEAP. I would be absolutely ASHAMED of myself if I had the kind of money they do and only contributed $1,000. It really shows how much they really care about anything...which is nothing. Of course, they don't know what it's like to go hungry. They don't know what it's like to be down on your luck and need a bit of help. I would call them niggardly without hesitation. There is something quite tawdry about the whole entire lot of them...and hypocritical too.
