Some actually find the experience spiritual. When I first read of this, I kinda figured there must be some P.C. angle to it. I think that a some people see native cultures doing stuff like this and think that they must do it in order to be cool.

It won't be long before they will demand that Medicare pay for the procedure. And if it proves unwanted, painful or life-threatening in the long run, they will demand federal dollars for research to correct the condition -- with many touching sob stories.
I bet they even come up with their own color ribbon.

I hear the Democrats are all for this. It gives new meaning to the Indian term "speaking with a forked tongue".

The craze, which involves surgically splitting the tongue to make it look like a lizard's tongue, has been branded a mutilation by legislators in Illinois.

Democrats have had forked tongues for years, what is so new about this? :-)
Seriously, this is just horrific, and should be outlawed.

Meanwhile, some lawmakers are so outraged by the procedure they are using the power of their office to make it illegal. One such person is Illinois state Rep. David Miller from Chicago's south suburbs who has authored a bill that requires tongue-splitting to be performed only for medical reasons and only by a doctor or dentist. OK, don't get me wrong. I think the procedure is silly, stupid, disgusting, probably dangerous and likely to lead to a lifetime of regret in the majority of people who get it done.
But do we need a law against it??? I am so sick of this mindset that says we need to make laws to protect people from their own foolish choices.
Anyone dumb enough to undergo "Tongue splitting" can damn well face the consequences of their actions ten years down the road when they look at themselves in the mirror and wonder "Why the hell did I do that?"
