COLUMBUS, Ohio - President Bush and his political allies have gone too far in labeling critics of his domestic policies as unpatriotic, Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe says.
McAuliffe, carrying his message to the Ohio Democratic Party's annual state dinner on Saturday, said the White House "has shamelessly exploited the heartfelt compassion and patriotism that brought our country together after Sept. 11.
"As 9/11 and the war in Iraq pushed all domestic news to the back pages of the television broadcasts, this administration has presided over a devastating economic policy, a policy of massive tax cuts for the rich."
McAuliffe singled out ads taken out against U.S. Sen. George Voinovich , an Ohio Republican up for re-election next year who opposed Bush's proposed $726 billion tax cut package as fiscally irresponsible.
Voinovich settled for a Senate version that would cut taxes by nearly $350 billion over 10 years, with additional cuts paid for by new revenue driving its cost to almost $420 billion.
Voinovich's reluctance to support Bush's plan was met with ads from a pro-tax cut group known as The Club for Growth.
The ads featured images of Voinovich and Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine, another tax cut critic who voted against the Senate plan, with French flags waving in the background, linking the pair's opposition to the Bush plan to France's opposition to the war in Iraq.
"Let me tell you folks, that is a disgrace. This is George Bush's Washington. We're going to beat George Bush and George Voinovich, but we're going to do it on principles and we're going to do it on morals," McAuliffe told the Ohio Democrats.
Republican National Committee spokesman Jim Dyke said Bush had nothing to do with the ads that ran against Voinovich. Ohio Republican Party Chairman Robert Bennett said Bush political adviser Karl Rove and others were critical of the ads.
Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, one of nine candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination, told reporters before his speech to the Ohio dinner: "I don't think we can beat George Bush by being Bush-light. We need a fiscal conservative and a social progressive and that's who I am."
In his speech, Dean said the cost of the war in Iraq has increased with Americans still in the Middle Eastern country and that homeland security is suffering a funding shortfall as a result.
"I think this country is not safer since the war with Iraq has ended," Dean said.
Rep. Dennis Kucinich ), a former Cleveland mayor and the only other presidential candidate at the dinner, pushed his message of national health insurance, labor rights and trade protections.
He reminded the crowd that he had beaten Republican incumbents in his races for mayor, state senator and Congress.
"In 2004, I'm prepared to replace another Republican incumbent who happens to be in the White House," Kucinich said.

--Two simple reasons why the Republicans won and Took The Majority--
1) The DNC and the Clinton King and Queen were effectively told by the American people....
WERE NOT GONNA TAKE,NO! WERE NOT GONNA TAKE IT...ANYMORE
NO MORE LIES, HATRED, CORRUPTION AND EMBARRASMENT!!!
LOOK AT THE DIFFERENCE IN THE TWO PARTIES AND IT IS A NO-BRAINER AS TO WHY THE DNC LOST!
2)
THE DIFFERENCE IS APPARENT...THE RNC HAS CLASS AND MORALS AND AN AGENDA THE MAJORITY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WANT. THE DNC ARE A BUNCH OF CHILDISH, WHINY LOSERS, THAT DO NOTHING BUT BASH OTHERS ON THEIR WEB PAGE!
AMERICA WISED UP AND BOUGHT A HUMONGOUS CONTAINER OF DRAINO AFTER CUTTING THROUGH THE DEMS PLUMB SNOW JOB WITH CHAIN SAWS. THE CRAP HAS BEEN ALL CLEARED!

"We're going to beat George Bush and George Voinovich, but we're going to do it on principles and we're going to do it on morals," McAuliffe told the Ohio Democrats. Continuing the Dems' long tradition of supporting unilateral disarmament.

In other news, Terry McAuliffe warned President Bush not to "politicize" the 2004 Presidential election. "The President has shamelessly used his political record and skill to bring politics into the political process," said McAuliffe.

I don't recall Bush calling anybody unpatriotic Nor do I. Perhaps the Dems are associating themselves with the A.N.S.W.E.R. anti-war street rallies that various people labelled anti-American.

McAuliffe exploiting bogus notion that Bush is exploiting patriotism.
To: TaRaRaBoomDeAyGoreLostToday!
There is patriotism, and then there is loyalty to your country and the foundations on which it is based. There is no doubt that Terry McAuliffe is patriotic to SOME principle, somewhere, but it is not geared to allegiance to the United States. And certainly not to any country in which uncouth cowboys can, with apparent impunity, swagger across the flight deck of an aircraft carrier just after hopping out from the co-pilot's seat after landing.
Repeatedly ask, over and over, of anyone who thinks that George W. Bush does not fully discharge the duties of the office of the President of the United States satisfactorily, whom do they believe could? You can't replace somebody with nobody. Democrats have no vision and no plan for governing the nation. Oh, sure, they come up with some "plan" for health care, but how does that deter al-Qaeda in any way?
To: TaRaRaBoomDeAyGoreLostToday!
Oh my goodness. Patriotism. I am so ashamed for us./sarcasm

"we're going to do it on principles and we're going to do it on morals,"
Two things McAuliff knows nothing about.
