[history]
Tt was a comment that had political veterans chuckling last week.
Former Vermont governor Howard Dean, they said, seemed to be having a Claude Rains moment, professing himself to be shocked - shocked! - to find tough politics going on in this presidential campaign.

"In the waning days of the [2000 VT gubernatorial] campaign, Dean's commissioner of agriculture penned a letter to the state's farmers, warning them that [Dean's opponent] Dwyer opposed the New England Dairy Compact, which keeps milk prices stable with Washington subsidies to small farmers."
Is this the type of person Dems want to represent them, someone who uses government offices to attack rivals?

"Doing politics in Massachusetts is the equivalent of playing football at an Ohio State or a Miami" Lehane said. The players are usually on illegal substances, various crimes have to be swept under the rug, and an IQ of less than 80 is a prerequisite for entry.

The Globe, part of the NYT organisation (can you say Jayson Blair? Patricia Smith? Mike Barnicle? All these mendacious mutts learned their craft at the Globe), has a long tradition of running puff pieces on Kerry. Every election they have a profile of the Republican (Controversial Right-Winger Frightens Women and Children") and one of Kerry ("Achievement, Brilliance Mark Senator's Life"). Over the next few weeks you will see the Globe do a hatchet job on every other Dem candidate, trying to boost Kerry's chances. They know that Dean is more popular with liberal party activists. Kerry has done stuff horrifying to Dem activists, like vote in favour of some military bills.
Madeline Kunin was a former nun, and her interpersonal relations were such that she was nicknamed "Attilla the Nun."
Mike Dukakis is as gracious and nice in person as the article says. We share a lawyer so I run into him occasionally. His politics are as wrong as two boys kissing, but he's a warm human being.
Massachusetts is as corrupt as it ever was. The U Mass chancellor is the brother, and support system, for 10-most-wanted fugitive Whitey Bulger. Billy Bulger was head of the state senate; he never made more than a state senator's pay, and had nine kids (all of whom went to private schools but one), but by the time he retired, he had tens of millions. Most of the guys in his crime family now have no-show to low-show jobs in the state university system.
Back to the Globe and Kerry, a couple of years ago Mr, 57 Varieties twisted arms, or paid people off, or something, in order to get a fire hydrant that was in front of his Cambridge house moved to in front of a neighbour's house instead. The neighbour was livid, but wasn't a US Senator or even connected in Democratic politics, so he got steamrolled. Kerry was up one parking space. The Globe never covered the controversy. Just like it never pressed on Kerry's medals scandal. They like him, therefore they will only report in ways that favour him. He could murder his wife, and the headline would say: "Public Shares Grief of Widower Kerry."

Dean ran a very tight ship as governor. Not a nickle was spent that he didn't authorize. Compared to his predecessors, he was a fiscal conservative. Domestic partnership was his one big PC move. Now he's moved to the left for the primaries, since that seems to be what turns the idiots on.
This Globe article is totally transparent. It's either in the service of Mr. Ketchup, or possibly of Hillary! In any case, they are obviously clearing the way in their typical dishonest fashion.

Great commentary by 18F. One of the riches of FR is that we get analysis from people who know the territory.

Lousiana, Payne said, ''may be the champ: It's really the dirtiest, meanest politics in the country, and the money they put behind campaigns there makes it really insufferable.''
Well, that's interesting. You learn something everyday. I would have thought NY or Illinois was king of that hill.

I don't like Dean. Just a gut reaction. He just seems to have a mean streak in him.

There rumors that the Duke is a nice guy, might be. His wife was a speed addict, his father, a Doctor, was an abortionist before it became popular, these are fellow Rats, according to my Southie friends.
The Duke is the cause of most of the problems in Mass to this day, Big Dig to end with. I hope the man, corrupt and evil thing that he is, Rots in Hell.

For me it's worse than that -- there's some almost psychopathic about Dean. Really. When I heard him ranting his anti-war schtick, and listening to him try to explain why he's not subordinating U.S. sovereignty by clearing every decision thru the U.N.... he gives me more goosebumps than Clintoon did as a candidate.

I get the same feeling, workerbee.
