Stop the presses! Lefty Alterman defends WSJ's Fund.
Conservative Wall Street columnist John Fund may be one of those terrible right-wingers who picked on poor Bill and Hillary Clinton, but he is "not the kind of guy who pretends to want to marry women and then beats them up," wrote the "Nation's rabid leftie Eric Alterman.
Noting Fund's conservative sins, Alterman says it "was fun to imagine, after he got himself arrested last year, that Fund was really a monster who had walked out on a planned marriage with his girlfriend and then beat her up - the dastardly deeds of which he was publicly accused in 2001. Even better, to his ill-wishers, was the rumor that Fund had long ago had an affair with the woman's mother, and knocked up both of them."
The left rejoiced when Fund was arrested and charged with felony abuse. Writes Alterman:
"Well, it's a fact of life in our scandal-besotted culture that it does not take much in the way of evidence to publish charges that can ruin a man's life. The charges against Fund appeared most prominently (and repeatedly) in Lloyd Grove's gossip column in the Washington Post and Richard Johnson's Page Six in the New York Post. They were trumpeted across the Internet on various leftist sites like American Politics Journal; by the controversialist John Connolly, who posted them on weaselsearch.com; and by Village Voice media reporter Cynthia Cotts, who reported on them twice and even escorted Fund's accuser to David Brock's Manhattan book party for Blinded by the Right, where Cotts introduced me to the woman in question, Morgan Francis Pillsbury."
Cotts, by the way, found it necessary to report, after a visit to Fund's apartment, that it was - horrors! - full of "dirty dishes, unopened mail, and bottles of alcohol from hotel minibars"; the floor, she added, was "covered with piles of black socks and dirty underwear."
Note to bachelors: Do not invite this woman to your digs under any circumstances. And get those black socks off the floor and wash your skivvies or you'll wind up in the Village Voice!
Miss Pillsbury, it seems, is quite a piece of work. After charges against Fund were dropped, Alterman came by documents which he says clear Fund.
"Over the past few weeks, I've received a set of documents from a close friend of Fund's - now posted on the Internet - that demonstrate to almost any fair-minded person that Fund is probably the victim of a deeply disturbed person. In a signed affidavit, the woman in question - whose true age is 36, seven years older than was reported, and who was born Carolyn Anne Barteaux but carries a passport (a copy of which was provided to me by Fund) under the name Carolyn Anne Pillsbury and now goes by Morgan Francis Pillsbury - withdraws any accusations of physical abuse, accusations that resulted in Fund's arrest. She also denies in the affidavit that they had ever planned to marry.
"In a letter to the Wall Street Journal, she acknowledges that she has 'trouble distinguishing between reality and fantasy' and in a sworn deposition, she says she has a 'borderline personality disorder. One of the symptoms of this condition is an inability to discriminate truth from fiction.' In that same deposition, in response to the question, 'What lies had you told in the past?' she answers, 'Too many to name.'
"When I contacted Pillsbury by e-mail to ask her about these documents, she insisted that the two had planned to marry. She professed not to know that the assault charges against Fund had been dropped, claiming the DA has not been clear with her and that the case was "grossly mishandled." In short, she now denies what she stated in the sworn documents.
"In her civil complaint against Fund, she charges him with 'opprobrious, egregious, wanton, willful and oppressive' battery. (Fund has filed a counterclaim, and the two remain in litigation.)
"I must admit, I did not find Pillsbury's story compelling when I first read the reports. Now, given her signed or sworn statements, I find it even less so, particularly after discussing the details with Fund, who admits to many gross misjudgments and mistakes with regard to his relationship with Pillsbury but continues to deny any abuse whatever. (I did not receive a response from Pillsbury's attorney.)"
What Alterman is saying, in effect., is that Fund may be a right-wing nut, but he's innocent of being an abuser of women.
And Alterman may be a left-wing nut, but he's an honest one (in this instance, anyway).

If the left had had a smoking gun about this, Fund would have been crucified. The fact that the story died a natural death pretty much exonerated him. (But he still showed a huge lapse in judgment).

I've had lapses in judgement without being falsely accused, smeared and my ability to make a living threatened. The false accusations were widely believed.

Ahhh, but no intelligent person believed them. Gossip is gossip, and only the left gave it credence. BTW, how many liberals do you know who a) read the WSJ, or b) know who John Fund is? So he was excoriated by the left media, and the right ignored the rumors.

Ahhh, but no intelligent person believed them. Gossip is gossip, and only the left gave it credence. Intelligent or not, there were MANY right here on Free Republic who believed them. They especially believed the accusations that Fund had helped procure abortions for both women.
This place is home to some of THE most gullible saps in the world.

Well, I would definitely question the intelligence of those Freepers. Even Brit made a point of keeping him on the air when this surfaced.

Well, it is worth noting that he pursued his girlfrinds daughter and then tried to get her to have an abortion when he got her pregnant, that much is not in dispute.

Source and citation please?

There was a telephone transcript and recording that was on the web when this story broke that I listened to. I am looking for it now.

Mother's Day 2002
by Melinda Pillsbury-Foster
May 11, 2002 | Mother's Day is traditionally filled with small remembrances, lovely buffet breakfasts and happy hugs. But no mother worth her salt would trade any of these delights for the knowledge that her child was well and safe.
I know. I am the mother of five and one of my children lives daily in fear for her life.
Morgan lives in New York City. Even though she locks herself in at night, she often wakes shaking because she is afraid.
She has reason: after she filed a complaint with the police against her ex-lover for physical abuse and following his subsequent arrest, there have been two break-in attempts in her apartment, located in a safe area and in a "secure" doorman building. I was on the phone with her when the first took place -- the last time she felt safe. She saw the doorknob turn and threw herself against the door, throwing the neglected bolt.
Two such attempts in three weeks in not a coincidence.
Morgan refused to flee for her life. She often calls me late at night, needing to hear my voice. We talk long into the hours of darkness. I am her mother and I share her fear. She asked me why the world demands she run and hide when she has a restraining order. The question, of course, presumes that the rhetoric of justice is the same as the practice and many of us realize that the reality is far different.
The system often appears to be rigged such that justice is not available to women who "inconveniently" accuse those with power. My daughter was unwise enough to have a long-term relationship with an influential political pundit who has power and does not hesitate in wielding it. Even though he has been charged with hideous acts of abuse -- physical and emotional -- he stands accused of domestic violence and, it would seem, looks to be calling in IOU's garnered through twenty years of being a political insider.
IOU's are amazing things. They can cause the photos taken of your former girlfriend's injuries, taken by the police, to disappear. They can transmute paperwork to show that the photos were never taken -- even when the mother of the girl, myself, was a witness.
Unfortunately, a copy of the original and accurate police records noting the existence of the photos is on line and can be viewed, if you are interested. Somehow, the DA's office in Manhattan never received a copy.
One wonders what kinds of favors might have changed hands during the course of these perfect spring days in New York City. Might they have something to do with other uncomfortable secrets that threaten the man who stands accused of battering my child?
Is it possible that someone in law enforcement compromised his or her oaths and duties, and misused their power? The sad truth is that there are too many such people in this world. You meet them everywhere, in circles high and low. Some people will sell themselves for the opportunity of just talking to people with power. Some people come cheap; others cost more.
But they all speak the belief that they cannot be stopped and they are too often right. This has been the way it is far too often through human history and in the history of this country.
People who misuse their power are the source of more human suffering than we can possibly imagine. But all people of power misused know that there is a single thing they must avoid. That thing is the light of public knowledge.
The truth has a power all its own. The words with which God first brought the world into being were held within a single phrase: "Let there be light."
For what we know we need not fear;
What we understand we can change;
What we understand no longer possesses the power to destroy us, our future, and our hopes for our children.
Power is given in trust. When trust is broken power must be revoked. Human institutions such as courts of law and City Hall do not listen to the fall of every sparrow in flight, but they hear the hammer of retribution when we are not silent.
Mother's Day is coming and I am a mother asking for a gift. That gift is justice for my daughter, a victim of domestic violence, and hope for unnamed other daughters of other mothers who also live in fear.
Domestic violence is a crime. It is a crime with a perpetrator who is known and named. We can speak loudly to power subverted and for justice long deferred for many, many women by demanding that this case be heard; that the DA look into whether there is a tie between evidence that has vanished and the influential, powerful individual who stands accused of abusing my daughter; that the "disappearers" of documents also be brought to justice; and that the people of power learn that neither abuse of our persons, our trust, or our justice system will be tolerated.
Next Monday, after you have spent a very special day with your own mother take a moment and call City Hall. Morgan's mother will really appreciate it.
