I don't know how true it is but I read that the original plan was for the President to go in one of the 2-seater jets but the SS nixed the idea. What I'd like to know is just exactly what the SS could do to protect him in such a situation anyway? Help fish him out of the drink in case the plane went down? If they are in the same plane, wouldn't they be likely to be injured also?

That's why W went in the Viking, with more seats. Perhaps there were other jets accompanying Bush's that weren't observed ... a full complement of airborne protectors?
