The Russian military, in plans drawn up at the request of President Vladmir Putin, argues that the only way Russia can deal with an escalating regional conflict with the U.S., would be to employ nuclear weapons. How the Wyrm turns ...... this used to be our doctrine with regards to possible West Germany invasion in the late 70's ..... we didn't know if we could win.

This is hillarious. They are using a handful of bombers and this is somehow a mission of "global scale." Honestly, I think most US military planners will be laughing at this.
Taking out the GPS satellites...get real. It takes how long to get a spacecraft into orbit. The planning is intense. And we are supposed to believe that they have the resources poised to take out the satellites. I don't think so.
We had hundreds of fighters and bombers over Iraq at any one time. The Russian military does not have the resources or the experience to launch a large scale military operation. Look at Chechnya and look what they did in Afghanistan. They suck, and any idle threat they make is just that, an idle threat.
You have to understand, out military operates under logistical geniuses. Russia just doesn't have them and has nothing to learn from. They have not launched a successful military campaign in a long time. Their little exercise, and I stress little, amount to comedy.

Naturally this assumes that they have the av gas for the planes, they can find pilots who aren't giving at the local blood bank to get money for food, and that they have enough crew to get some ships out of port. They have fallen on hard times, but are still trying to show(unsuccessfully) that they still matter on the global stage.

FROM ANOTHER THREAD:
Russia to Deliver Attack Against the USA: A Training One
.......... During the exercises, the newspaper says, Russian strategic bombers and submarine missile-carriers will simulate nuclear attacks against several military targets on the territory of the USA and Great Britain. They will also work on searching for and liquidating US Navy aircraft carriers transporting attack squadrons.
To allow this is 'MAD'-ness!
Call this 'exercise' OFF NOW AND FOREVER!
(If NO,.....then NOW is THE time to 'launch' on Russia!)
Strike First-First Strike!
(This will be our 'exercise'......too!)
Is Russia's secret ally in this really their old comrades North Korea?
Y2K is now to be repeated, but NOW is there Nuke DANGER?

The Ruskies are blowing hot flatulence out of their southern sphincter. That's almost as likely as the Axis of Weasels having the infrastructure to support it, much less the Axis of Evil.
Personally, I'm glad that we (leadership) finally have some gonads.

Awh, yes. Russia is no longer a threat!

You are forgetting that the Russians never ever cut back on their strategic missiles and strategic forces. In fact, they have increased funding and development for them since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
It is very naive to think that because their conventional forces are in disarray that the same can be extrapolated to their strategic nuclear force.
Russia still has over 6,000 nuclear warheads and has deployed over 10,000 dual-purpose mobile SAM/ABM--their no nonsense approach to a SDI system some using nuclear tipped SAMs.
The Russia we are fed and the real Bear are two different things.

Per X42:
New York City, Oct. 23, 1995: "For the first time since the dawn of the nuclear age, there's not a single solitary nuclear missile pointed at the people of the United States of America.
Concord, New Hampshire, Feb. 2, 1996: "... for the first time since the dawn of the nuclear age, there is not a single nuclear missile pointed at an American child today.
Philadelphia, April 26, 1996: "... for the first time since the dawn of the nuclear age, there is not a single, solitary nuclear missile pointed at an American child tonight."
Toledo, Ohio, August 26, 1996: "... for the first time since the dawn of the nuclear age, on this night, this beautiful night, there is not a single nuclear missile pointed at a child in the United States of America."

Just out of idle curiousity...
Should Russia make the same demand when STRATCOM puts on a major exercise, where they practice fighting a nuclear war against Russia? And if we refuse to call off our exercise, and never hold it again, should Russia launch a first strike?

You are forgetting that the Russians never ever cut back on their strategic missiles and strategic forces.Actually, they did--the START I and START II treaties cut their warhead count by more than 50%.
