"High-Stakes" Test Rejected At Boise Hearing

BOISE -

None of the people who spoke at a Boise public hearing yesterday support a proposed test to determine if high school students will graduate.

The state's plan includes a "high-stakes" test, so named because a student's graduation would ride on how they do on the test.

Educators also criticized the plan for laying out sanctions against school districts whose students don't show academic improvement. Those sanctions are proposed without any mention of money needed to improve student performance.

Elementary school teacher Lydia Powers says many high school students aren't mature enough to understand the effects of a test that would largely determine their future.

There's major protests over this in Florida. There you need to score 40(out of 100) to pass, and you get 5 tries. This is really HILARIOUS! Since when is 40 a passing score anyway, but it SOOOOO tough it's brought out the masses, beam me up!

of course they didn't tell proponents of testing they were having a meeting, LOL!

Hmph. They’re a mercenary bunch of mf-ers. Evidently the amount you’re paying them now is only enough to get them to show up. To actually teach will cost more.

If they aren't mature enough to understand the difference between graduating and not graduating, then they aren't mature enough to graduate.

You know, some do better on tests than others. I do average on tests ~ does that make me average? No, because I happen to be creative and work hard. Tests should be only part of determining graduation criteria, IMHO

That's complete B.S. Obviously they worry about SAT and ACT tests. They start planning their college careers in their sophomore year. I don't think they're lacking in maturity.

1st - the test is only part of the determining factor of graduating: the students must first pass the requried classes. 2nd - the tests are so easy they are a joke, and the students don't even have to do well on the tests.
