Democrats....Bush Key on Assault Weapons

WASHINGTON (AP) -

President Bush should take the lead in overcoming resistance within his own party to extending an assault weapons ban due to expire next year, Democrats said Wednesday.

"If the bill dies we will lay it at the president's doorstep," Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said a day after House Majority Leader Tom DeLay told reporters that the 1994 law banning the manufacture of 19 types of common military-style assault weapons would not be renewed.

Schumer said the gun bill would be an issue in the 2004 election, a development that could pose problems for Democrats who represent districts with strong gun rights sentiment. The assault ban vote was also a campaign topic in 1994, the year Republicans recaptured the House after spending 40 years in the minority.

Bush, taking a position at odds with the National Rifle Association, has voiced support for extending the ban, and White House spokesman Ari Fleischer on Wednesday said that support would carry weight in Congress.

"This is a matter that the House has to work out, of course, by listening to the will of its members, but the president's position is clear on it," Fleischer said. "When the president states his position like that, it helps get the message to the Congress."

Fleischer would not say whether Bush would pressure DeLay to bring such a bill up for a vote. DeLay, R-Texas, on Tuesday indicated that there would be no effort to renew the current law before it expires on Sept. 13, 2004. "The votes in the House are not there to reauthorize it," he said.

"The real question is will the president weigh in and ask the leaders to schedule a vote," said Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., who as a senior adviser to President Clinton played a key role in guiding the 1994 legislation through Congress.

All you could come up with was the Jenny Craig comment?

It goes far beyond his apparent obsession with junk food, although a sugar high would possibly explain his frantic level of posting gibberish. I’ve also commented on his ridiculous manner of dress, most men usually stop dressing like drug store cowboys by the time they reach puberty which might also explain some of his juvenile comments.

Yes, I find his lack of dietary restraint and juvenile dress entertaining but can’t extend that same humor to the majority of his posting. At best his postings are a miss-mash of garbled links, half quotes, misquotes, rehashed rumor and just plain BS.

I’m sure such ravings must appeal to some since it fits in well with the so called conservatives who are consumed with finding two new reasons to hate Bush each day by noon or be miserable all day. You can look at Fred for a good example of this.

Theirs is absolutely nothing wrong with a person dressing like an extra from “City Slickers” and lacking self restraint, but that same self indulgence and lack of maturity reflects in his rants most of the time; which pretty well sums up his political philosophy and chronic inconsistencies.

So please, don’t just point out my comments concerning his girth. You really should include my observations about his dressing like a clown and likening his posts to the ravings of a hyper-active child trying to please parents that hate the President.

Beyond that, I’m sure he’s a jolly fellow.

I can be against assault weapons and still be for the 2nd amendment.

I know that's a notion that some of you can't fathom, but it's the way most of us feel.

In you're case, Bush wins the battle and loses the war.
In my scenario, Bush wins the battle (Delay loses it, if at all), and Bush wins the war.

I don't think Bush will do any lobbying behind the scenes. My sense is this is all well coordinated. We will see how it plays out.

"Sorry, I just wanted the weight requirements and the dress code for Free Republic. Can you help? I will be here later."

Sure, since you’re new here I don’t mind helping you out but the best way to illustrate it would be for you to visit todd’s baseball hall of fame freep thread.

If you do you’ll see that there are no weight requirements, dress code or even standards of consistency in ranting. Heck, you can dress up like the Marlboro Man, cut and paste, misquote people and repeat the same old discredited fantasies about the President all you want. If that is your proclivity you and his immenseness will get along famously.

And where exactly in your posts do I say I am FOR the assault weapons ban?

Or do you plan to put your own spin on that, too?

BTW, better check #359 to see what REALLY was pulled before you go saying it's my post about AWB that was pulled. I called somebody a bigot and THAT was pulled.

As far as I can see, the posts on that thread are EXACTLY as I said they were.

Sorry, Todd.

He did do a great job. He proved positively that I never said I was FOR the assault weapons ban.

Sorry, Toddie. I know you were counting on it!
