Belgian minister criticizes lawsuit against US general

The Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel has fiercely criticized the case brought against the commander of US forces in Iraq, General Tommy Franks. The lawsuit was filed by the Belgian lawyer Jan Fermon on behalf of nineteen Iraqis. They say General Franks' troops are guilty of at least twenty separate instances of war crimes. The Belgian minister says the Iraqis are misusing Belgium's universal competence law, which makes it possible to bring charges of human rights violations in Belgium, regardless of where the alleged crimes took place.

A federal prosecutor will decide whether or not the case is referred to an investigating judge. As the Iraqis have no ties with Belgium, the prosecutor may refuse the case, or refer it to another country. The United States government is putting pressure on Belgium not to allow a "misuse of the law".

I don't know what "pressure" means exactly, but I do know that if the government allows the hard Left to carry on this charade, relations between the US and Belgium will be damaged in unprecidented ways.

I am hoping that these lawsuits succeed and that Franks, and Ariel Sharon visit Belgium. I would just love to see their puny governments try and apprehend either one of them. They would see U.S. or Israel Special Forces inside Brussels inside of an hour to show these filthy nazis just how tiny they are.

In view of the fact that they never brought charges against the mass-murder, Saddam Hussein, nor Castro, Mugabe, or any al-Queda figurehead, their agenda is more than a little transparent. At least Michel has the sense to see a disaster looming, although it would be interesting to see the hyper-hypocrital Belgians go through with it.

What it really does is completely validate the widely-damned (in Europe) U.S. reluctance to participate in the International Criminal Court. The pretense was that the ICC would never be abused this way. That pretense is no longer possible.
