Drivers should expect more traffic stops for seat belt checks

Kern County drivers can expect more traffic stops for not wearing seat belts.

On Monday, the California Highway Patrol began a two-month crackdown on seat belt use.

Billboard advertising, radio and TV ads will remind people to buckle up with sayings like "Click It or Ticket" and "Remember...or be Remembered."

During a similar crackdown in November, the CHP says it wrote more than 10,000 seat belt tickets statewide in one week, mostly for people who forgot to buckle up for short trips.

The accidents keep happening,” said CHP Commissioner Spike Helmick. “But the seat belts keep people alive and that's what our job is really all about."

The CHP enforcement campaign will last through Memorial Day weekend and the advertisements will be up through June.

The federal government plans to survey seat belt use in California after the campaign to see if it worked.

Up here, State Patrol officers have to write 3 of these damn tickets an hour in order to qualify for overtime pay. We have a citizen initiative in the works to rescind this law that was passed last year.
