Rabbi Shlomo Yaffe:
"A Rabbi’s Perspective on Today’s Issues”

Date:    Tuesday, 13 May 2003
Time:    1730 – 2030
Place:    West Hartford Public Library, Webster Hall

Shlomo Yaffe, syaffe@juno.com, was born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in Portland, ME and Los Angeles, CA. After studying at Yeshivot in Miami, London and New York, he received his Rabbinic Ordination from the Central Yeshiva Tomchei Temimim Lubavitz.

During his postgraduate fellowship at the Leeds Kollel in England, Rabbi Yaffe created the Leeds Open Yeshiva-an institution devoted to bringing high Quality in-depth Jewish learning to individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

He founded the Institute for Jewish Literacy, which provides courses on Jewish knowledge for the entire Jewish Community.

Rabbi Yaffe’s activities focus on adult and young adult education. He organizes seminars open to all on the Torah’s perspective on contemporary legal, social and scientific issues. He is dedicated to making Jewish mysticism accessible and useful in daily life.

… the Torah’s perspective …

In his Tuesday morning Bible Classes at the West Hartford Jewish Community Center, Rabbi Yaffe teaches the origins of Jewish tradition, custom and ethics. He regularly compares the events of biblical times with modern History and current events.

Today’s problems in the Middle East originated 3800 years ago. . Today’s social problems were confronted by the spiritual leaders of the Jewish nation through the turmoil of the Diaspora, conquest and enslavement by Muslim countries in the Middle East, and the ultimate abomination of the Holocaust sponsored by the largely Christian nations of Europe.

What is important for families, tribes and nations to survive in peace? There is no single answer, but there are lessons learned throughout the ages that when applied by contemporary civilizations lead to prosperous and honorable lives for their people.

… the Issues

Rabbi Yaffe will consider questions about issues confronting us today:

The War in Iraq and Against Muslim Terrorism
Israel and the Arab World
Sexual Mores: Homosexuality, Marriage and the Family
Abortion
Cloning
Church-State Separation
The Ten Commandments and 7 Noahide Laws
The Role of Women
Anti-Semitism
The Evolution of Jewish and Christian Relations
Is Islamic Reform Possible?

… and other questions confronting our country and us.
