Louisville Courier-Journal Endorses Steve Nunn in KY Gubernatorial Primary

One candidate in the Republican gubernatorial primary -- state Rep. Steve Nunn of Glasgow -- holds genuine promise of breaking that fruitless cycle. We endorse his candidacy.

In the Democratic-dominated House, Mr. Nunn has worked effectively across party lines while tackling some of the state's toughest issues.

Most seem to think that Fletcher will be the GOP nominee, but the C-J says that Fletcher is "too genaral" and lacking in specifics to solve KY's far-reaching problems.

Can a leftist paper BE more obvious in trying to wreak havoc in the GOP primary with this garbage endorsement ? They know full well Nunn is viewed as a menace and a thug in the party with ZERO chance of winning the election, even if Paul Patton could run for a 3rd term. What a joke. Probably should FReep the paper to let them know what we think of their sleazy tactics.

This Courier-Journal endorsement of Steve Nunn is a kiss of death IMO. The C-J is afraid of Ernie Fletcher being a serious threat to their preferred Demo. Ben Chandler.

Too many KY Republicans are buying into the hostility to Fletcher as an "anointing" by McConnell being a bad thing. I disagree. Ernie Fletcher has a good shot at winning the governorship. Let's get behind our best chance to take the helm of Kentucky in a very long time.

Louisville Courier-Journal, Lexington Herald-Leader are both jokes in the Bluegrass State..the people only buy them for the coupons and the university sports coverage....their aren't called "fishwrappers" fer nothing... :)

Yeah, I probably shouldn't be surprised. I think our paper in Nashville is even worse (Gore's The Tennessean), which we refer to as Praavda on the Cumberland. We'd use it for fishwrap, but it always ends up turning our whitefish a red hue. :-(

Is Nunn related to Sam Nunn?

No, Steve Nunn is the son of former KY Governor Louie B. Nunn, 1967-71. He is a Republican.

Sam Nunn was a powerful and popular GA Democrat who served in the Senate from 1973-97. He was succeeded by former Sen. Max Cleland, D-GA.

Ironically, Louie B. Nunn lost the Senate race in KY to Democrat Walter Huddleston on the same day that Sam Nunn was elected in GA. That was also of course the same day that Nixon was reelected and that Jesse Helms won the first of his five terms in the Senate.

Okay you people, since we're talking Freepers and the Kentucky Governor's Race, did anyone see the special Election Day section in the Friday, May 9th Lexington Herald Leader ?? With respect to the Herald Leader, as awful as they may be, at least they published an entire page for every Gubernatorial candidate in both primaries, regardless of how "big" or "small" the candidate is said to be (something the Courier Journal will never do).

And if you didn't see this, here are some interesting quotes from page B5 (underlining and bolding are mine, for emphasis):

Retired Secret Service Agent Don Bell says he realized he'd made a "terrible mistake" shortly after he signed on as the running mate of Republican gubernatorial hopeful Virgil Moore.

"I realized I was getting nowhere in a losing campaign," Bell said in a recent interview. "I don't agree with him about anything."

In a Feb. 6 letter to the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance, Bell notified state officials that he would no longer be active in Moore's campaign.

In an interview, Bell did not provide specifics on what led to his decision.

He simply said, "I don't want anything to do with his campaign."

However, Bell has not technically withdrawn from the race because his name already appears on the ballot for the May 20 Republican Primary. As of last month, Bell's name was still on Moore's bumper stickers and campaign materials.

Bell, of La Grange, has made unsuccessful runs for state treasurer, state auditor, 4th District US representative and local office in Oldham County.

But now, Bell said, "I'm through with partisan politics. I'm looking for a vacation home out of state."

Hardly.

Nunn is the best Democrat the Republicans ever had since we ran most of the Hardin County RINOS out of the exec committee. Nunn is going nowhere.

Becca is a nice gal but she lacks the horsepower and organization to win.

Virgil Moore is a gentleman of the old school and of the highest integrity. I don't know what happened between him and Bell but Bell did nothing for the ticket. Moore is a bit blunt.

That leaves Fletcher. I listened to him yesterday and, to me, his comments and statements sure did not sound general, on the contrary, he was very specific. Fletcher has the experience and organization to win this election and again in Nov. You may not like the guy personally or may not agree with all his points but if you want a Republican Governor who is not bopping the hired help and any other bimbo in the state, you better get out an support him to the max. The alternative is a bought and paid for sleaze ball Democrat who has taken $130,000.00 campaign contribution from a guy he was inditing.

You folks figure it out.
