Iraqi Politician: Hussein and His Sons Are Alive

Dubai (Reuters) - The toppled Iraqi president Saddam Hussein and his two sons are live and are still staying in Iraq in the assessment of pro-American Iraqi politician Ahmad Chalabi.

"Our sources confirm that he (Saddam) hasn't left Iraq", Chalabi told the Arabian newspaper 'Aschark El Ausat' in an interview published on Monday. "I can't say how I know it but Saddam is traveling with a special escort and his former advisers have no idea where he is and what he is doing." Saddam is together with his two sons Udai and Kusai, however, they don't always travel together, Chalabi added.

Saddam's fate as well as that of his sons has been uncertain for weeks. Since the beginning of the Iraq War on March 20th there have been repeated rumors that Saddam had been killed in attacks of U.S. led forces.

A person close to Saddam had explained last week, however, that the former president is well and is organizing the resistance against the U.S. led forces which brought him down on April 9th. The Arabian newspaper 'El Kuds' published a letter on Saturday which is allegedly from Saddam. Saddam exhorts the Iraqi people in the six-page letter to rise up against the U.S. soldiers in Iraq.

U.S. units in Iraq have already captured 19 of the 55 most sought after members of the Iraqi leadership. Chalabi appeared optimistic that further arrests would soon be forthcoming. His party, the Iraqi National Convention (INC) supports U.S. troops for capturing the Iraqi leadership members, confirmed Chalabi.

I just saw this put up on the Yahoo-Germany site, which is reliable. It's a Reuter's report, though.

Saddam may very well still be alive today, but long after any
actuarial table estimation of his lifespan, these rumours
will persist.

He's dead, but it serves our purposes to keep the rumors going. That gives us cover for continuing to occupy Iraq until stability returns. It's also enlightening to observe how people behave (leaders of France, Germany, Russia, Syria, etc.) thinking there's still a chance that SH is still alive.
