Possible Jesse James Remains Exhumed
DNA Analysis Will Render Final Verdict
POSTED: 2:28 p.m. EDT May 11, 2003 UPDATED: 3:11 p.m. EDT May 11, 2003
NEODESHA, Kan. -- Anthropologists say they may have finally caught up to legendary outlaw Jesse James (pictured).
About two dozen people watched Saturday as the body said to be Jeremiah James was exhumed in southeastern Kansas. Jeremiah James reportedly died of a broken heart in 1935.
But some historians think it's really Jesse James.
Researchers will use DNA analysis to test hair, bones and teeth to see if the hunch is correct.
Descendants of Jeremiah James are skeptical. One 99-year-old descendant remembers Jeremiah James for his brown eyes, while Jesse James had blue eyes. She says Jeremiah was born in 1847, lived into his late 80s and died less than two months after his wife passed away.
Historians think Jesse James may have faked his death in 1882.
The outlaw is supposed to be buried in St. Joseph, Mo. Recent attempts to find his real burial site have been made in Kearney, Mo., and Granbury, Texas.

Why not just ask Cole Younger and Clem Miller what REALLY happened to Jesse?
Seems like a lot of unnecessary work to me.

The fact that almost everyone reading this headline knew who Jesse James was before they even clicked on the story is frightening. I mean, this is some two-bit bank robber who died over a hundred years ago, and he's still a household name.
You know what this means? It means that in 2115, people might still remember Monica Lewinsky. Hopefully, they will have forgotten Clinton. |

As the only American who has not yet been reported to actually be Jesse James, I will now officially state that I'm not him.
I'm Billy the Kid.

My grandad owned his house in Henryetta Oklahoma.
It was a rock house near the edge of town.

You've been watching Monster Garage again? Last night, Jesse had his first failure. They did not complete the project in the allocated time.

Muttley's great-great-great-great...you get the picture...Grandfather bit the real Jesse James on the ankle once after a bogus card game in a saloon, when the future desperado welched on the "bark when he's got a real hand" deal...a common talking-dog ruse in those days.
Just look for the teeth-marks with the broken fang. James turned to a life of crime after that incident, it is said. Great....Grand-dad subsequently made a living as The Amazing Whistling Bulldog ...and could knock the good eye out of a frontier squirrel across the street by spitting...a useful skill for always-hungry puppies...to this day.
Take it from me.
