Iraqi Ayatollah Wants No Foreign Influence
The ayatollah says the new Iraq needs a modern Islamic government that respects all groups, Iraq's majority Shi'ites and minority Sunni Muslims, as well as Kurds, Turkmen and Christians. As he puts it, Iraq is now engaged in a holy war of reconstruction and a march toward independence.
MANILA, Philippines (AP) - A bomb exploded Saturday at a crowded market in a southern Philippine city, killing at least nine people and wounding 41.
The Muslim extremist group Abu Sayyaf claimed responsibility and warned of further attacks, the mayor said.
Russia Consulting on U.S. Plans for Iraq
MOSCOW - Russia, saying it will push for a central U.N. role in Iraq, began consulting Saturday with other Security Council members over a proposed U.S. plan that relegates the United Nations to a largely advisory position.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A Muslim cleric close to U.S.-backed President Hamid Karzai was gunned down in southern Afghanistan, officials said Saturday.
