california really needs to be divided into two or three smaller states. North and south california.

I'm not sure if I want my neighbors electing more Senators. Though if it were East California and West California, that might be an improvement.

CCW laws makes it easy for the government to identify and track known firearm owners. Just another nail in our coffin. Why don't you fight for free unrestricted rights.

Checking your profile I see why you take the position expressed here. I disagree with you. First, we are winning the gun rights battle. Momentum is on our side. 35 states with CCW and counting. Further, a bill has been introduced to provide reciprocity among ALL states that have CCW. This would be a GIANT step forward.

I don't believe for one minute the government will be coming for my guns - or yours. More and more people are beginning to understand and appreciate the 2nd amendment articulates a right we all have.

I want CCW in place to help assure that people who are carrying ARE law-abiding. Abuses of carrying concealed would turn the tide against us.

California is a "may issue" not a "shall issue" state. The police chief of your town or the sheriff of your county has discretion to issue. If it's a rural county, you're often in luck. If an urban county, forget about it unless you are Don Perata, Sean Penn or Diane Feinstein.

As my pappy often told me:
If you have to ask, you can not afford it.

Check it out, be sure to watch the video.

This is the same guy who did the Glock Nyte Sites that caused such a turmoil in the Richmond, VA city council.

A .30 carbine round with 110 gr bullet produces 947 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle in your rifle. See the ballistics table at the IMI site. A .41 mag handgun hunting load is the closest approximation to your .30 cal M1. The .454 Casull tops out at 1902 ft-lbs. The S&W .500 Magnum tops at 2580 ft-lbs when firing the 440 gr hardcast round.

The M1 is recommended for small game hunting (under 50 pound critters). It is a fine rabbit rifle. The reloading dies are more expensive than most calibers...with the exception of 50 BMG.

My father always preferred the M1. In ROTC, they had to swap their M1s for some Enfields that weighed 13 lbs. Quite a handful for a junior high kid.

could you filll me in on just what the 480 Ruger is? I just saw it for the first time on the winchester website for the model 94 lever action, is it an old .48 cal pistol cartridge or what? I been outa the country for a while

The .480 Ruger is a new handgun cartridge put out a couple of years ago as a joint project by Ruger and Hornaday. Basically it's midway in power between a 44 magnum and a .454 Casull. Like the latter it's mainly intended for handgun hunting of big game. For that matter so is the new .500 S&W, which is more powerful than the .454 Casull. The .480 Ruger offers considerably more power than the 44 mag with much less recoil than the .454 Casull.

This is a bit confusing. I had heard the bill specifically bans only .50 BMG firarms, which the .500 S&W is not. Of course knowing how the anti-gunners work they would probably sell the bill as outlawing 50 BMG then deliberately write it to outlaw all guns firing cartridges of .50" or greater, including .500 S&W, .50 AE, .500 Nitro Express, etc. Any clarification?

The discussion was all about Rifle versions of the .50 BMG, but it is not past slime like Perata to broaden it to pistols. The approach is to call anything bad an assualt rifle. First semiautomatic small calibers were bad because someone might spray them inaccurately, and be used by criminals. Now large caliber and even single shot rifles are bad because someone might be too accurate, and no crime with them has ever been committed (knock wood). The bill might be aimed at EDM, the last rifle maker in the state. Jennings/Bryco and Davis are pistol makers still in the state, but Bryco might be rethinking it, having been found partly liable for selling a gun that went BANG when someone took it off safe and pulled the trigger when the magazine was out.

Honest, I don't make this stuff up. EDM makes a pretty nice .50 as such things go. Bolt action, 10 round magazine bullpup.

I have always wondered why people shot the .44 magnum (which is really only a .43) when the .45Colt does more damage, with lower recoil and lower pressures. The .45 Colt is what the .45 ACP was copied from. The .454 Casull is just a bit longer, and the .48 is wider. The .50 is an awful lot of a good thing. The biggest pistol of which I am familiar was a .577 Webley. The thing was a break top low velocity monster, about the size of a trumpet.

"rabbit" rifle?
If you are a poor marksman, I guess you might need an M1 to kill a rabbit....
My grandfather, in his later years, got tired of the recoil from the 30-40 Krag that HIS father brought back from WW1, and took to hunting with the .30 carbine that HE brought back from WW2.
That little 'popgun' killed more whitetails than I have ever SEEN. It ain't the GUN, people, it's the HUMAN who wields it.
The Israelis have the most effective "hit" teams currently active. Their weapon of choice? .22 SHORT!
You couch-potato Dirty Harry morons, go ahead and rock the block with your 'concealed' .50 BMG's. While you are busy impressing the MTV generation with your big bad booms, a REAL marksman will slide a .22 into your eye socket from 100 yards away. The greatest 'destiny' a 'concealed' .50 bmg has is as a trophy for the MARKSMAN who pries it off your cooling corpse.
regards,
DICK

I've taken all my rabbits with my father's old Stevens bolt action .22. I never take more than 10 rounds in the field and always return with a couple rabbits. Always head shots too...so I don't spoil the meat.

The M1 has more muzzle energy than a .44 magnum and the .44 is more than adequate for whitetail deer. I'm not surprised about the success.

The Israeli hit teams aren't nailing a sniper on the 12th story of a building at 1478 yards with a .22 short. It takes a 50BMG to pull off that feat. As you pointed out, the sniper with a .22 short is operating within 100 yards. Some sniper. I've planted 3 of 5 in the same hole at 25 yards with iron sights. At 100 yards with a scope, its no challenge at all to put all the rounds through a single ragged hole. An eye socket is a huge target in comparison.

WW1 vintage .303 ? Seems like they weighed WAY more than that, but as you say.. was a kid :)
And the .22 versions were just sleeved down .303, must be one of the heaviest 22 rifles ever !
