Tell your son "Well Done Sailor" from me. All real Americans are proud of what he and his buddies have accomplished. Fantastic track record on safety too - thats impressive.

Buy him a cold beer of his choice on me. Let me know where to send the $4.00 (private mail)and I'll do it!

I echo the sentiments and thankful congratulations to your son and would suggest contacting Kirby Wilber or John Carlson for a timely interview- This would be a great 1st hand account!

(P.S. Did the M's win?)

Actually, that makes for a bit of a story as well. The short answer is no. The night we went the yankees won, dammit.

But the funny part is, that we took with us to dinner on Tues. night a bottle of 1982 Bordeaux (yes, yes I know, french wine, but it was from the year of his birth and have kept it for 18 years for just such an occassion). The funny part is that I engaged in some conversation with the Wine Steward, who recognized the significance of the event. She told me that just last night (Monday) Joe Torre and some of the players were in for dinner. There were 6 people all together and they consumed, in addition to drinks before and after, a 4 liter bottle of 1988 Ch. La Tour ($$$)

She predicted a Yankee loss for Tuesday and was right!!

Great story! Hope your son has some more photos & stories when he gets back to see you.
Are you positive the ship was "crawling" along at 3 knots “ ? The less the wind over the deck. The “ Faster “ the plane must land. Making it some what more hazardous.
I don’t recall what the landing speed of the S-3 is. But if it’s coming in at 120 Knots. and let say the ship in going into a 30 kt wind. Traveling at 30 Kt. That 60 Kts of wind going over the deck. Or 80 MPH of speed for you landlubbers. That need not be stopped.

Howdy

Why do we need to be asked to indulge your "vanity" when all you did was post factual information which is packaged in a fascinating, brief, well written and topical post?

Do you need press credentials to avoid being speciously maligned here as a "vain" individual, even though your information is in every respect more direct and informative than any individual holding press credentials has written in any press outlet on this subject?

I think there should be some distinction between vainglorious blowhards and amateur reporters. Your reportage, if you will, is superior to the work product of any number of professional correspondents from whom vanity and puffed up self importance fairly oozes in their slanted work product.

I respect your humility, but you are anything but vain.

Thank you for a most informative post.

You, sir, are obviously mistaken.

There was no honor, there was no real justification for the President to go on that boat, and the boat had to go to great lengths to create a campaign photo op for President Bush.

I know this is true because that paragon of virtue, Robert KKK Byrd, told me so.

Shalom.

Thank you for this report! It's fantastic! What an honor it was, indeed to have the Commander in Chief thank them in person.

And THANK your son for me for his service and sacrifice. That's a LONG time to be away from family and home!

Some great stamps there. But I don’t know about that first one... When you first see the thumbnail. It looks as if Bush is getting ready to give a kiss to that Marine.

The seas were pretty calm. I don't think there was a 30 knot sea breeze. But you're right about the approach speed. The slower the carrier, the faster the approach.

Who knows. They might have putzing along just fast enough to maintain steerage, then sped up for flight ops.

This old Pvt. 1st class watched the landing and had little chills race up and down my back. Bush did good by our troops and it's preety obvious that the troops respect their C-in-C much to the chargin of the the Clintoonistas.
