Iraq Opposition Meets With U.S. Officials
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Five longtime Iraqi opponents of Saddam Hussein agreed Thursday to broaden the membership of their informal council the potential core of a new government by adding a Shiite Muslim group and the son of an old-guard democrat.
Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said anyone installed by the United States in the new interim administration would be purged if found to have been a senior member of Saddam's ousted Baath Party.
WASHINGTON - Nighttime commando raids nabbed some of Iraq's most wanted. Others meekly surrendered. Tariq Aziz answered a knock on the door of a family home and found himself face to face with U.S. troops.
U.S. commandos seized one of Saddam's half brothers after he survived a U.S. airstrike meant to kill him. Baghdad police arrested one of Saddam's financial masterminds.
KABUL, Afghanistan - The United Nations said Thursday it suspended mine clearing operations in a part of southern Afghanistan where a convoy of workers was ambushed earlier this week.
Operations of the U.N. Mine Action Center for Afghanistan were halted in "insecure areas" on the road from Kabul to the southern city of Kandahar after gunmen ambushed a convoy Monday in Zabul province.
COLOGNE, Germany - German authorities are monitoring more than 200 suspected Islamic militants as possible terrorism risks, a top security official said Thursday.
Officials have no specific evidence of any planned attacks, Manfred Klink, in charge of anti-terrorism measures for Germany's Federal Criminal Office, told a conference.
HAVANA - Cuba rejected its inclusion on a U.S. list of countries that support terrorism, accusing the United States Thursday of trying to create "the right conditions" to invade the communist country.
Cuba was one of seven countries that remained on a U.S. State Department list of nations that sponsor terrorism. The other countries named in a report last week were Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Syria and Sudan. But U.S. officials say Iraq is likely to be removed now that President Saddam Hussein has been deposed.
