CA: State Assembly paves way for acceptance of foreign IDs

A movement heralded by illegal immigrants who want all government agencies in California to accept identification cards issued by foreign nations has won significant support of state legislators in recent days.

The Assembly today approved a measure that would authorize state agencies to accept the consulate-issued ID cards, also known as matriculas consulares. Last month, the Assembly passed a similar bill that requires cities and counties to accept the same documentation.

Given the endemic corruption in the Mexican government, how tough would it be for a Syrian, say, to get one of these cards? My guess would be: not very.
