I realize that the above is not your original posting. However, I thought I'd address it though you anyway. The first sentence here didn't lead directly to the second. In fact, the Pilgrims came here to escape religious persecution, but their end objective was to set up their own faith as the established church. They then merrily proceeded to be intolerant of any other faiths, up to and including fining, imprisoning, tarring, feathering, lashing, exiling, and executing those who opposed their established church. Only a couple of the original 13 colonies were founded with religious freedom in mind, and it took quite some time to get everyone else on board.
