Why Do Conservatives So Quickly Abandon Their Own?
Cathryn Crawford

Posted on 05/04/2003 8:57:27 PM PDT by Cathryn Crawford

Isn't it true that a lot of the bashing of Bill Bennett is simply due to the fact that conservatives naturally rejoice in the misfortunes of their own? The ability of the conservative movement to abandon their own people when they are even slightly attacked by the liberal/media establishment is absolutely astounding.

Why are conservatives so quick to judge their own? Are we afraid? Are we so afraid of being tainted by a scandal that we will so easily turn away at the first sight of blood?

This is a serious and long-term issue among conservatives that deserves to be adressed.

"Why Do Conservatives So Quickly Abandon Their Own?"

Because we value truth, above all.

We do not abandon them, they abandon truth.

Oh, come on, that's a copout. Explain yourself.

Conservatives are more dedicated to truth than party - the antithesis of Liberal groupthink.

It is my belief that Mr. Bennett will accept responsibility for the wrong he has done and will make it right. That will validate his teachings on virtue and again set an example for us to follow. That is my hope.

I hope so, too. But I don't really think he did anything wrong.

"I hope so, too. But I don't really think he did anything wrong."

By his own code of moral conduct he knows that he has wronged. But I don't condemn him or anyone for that; we all fall from grace at some time or another.

What he does about it now will be the true test of moral character and he knows that. I know because I learned it from him.

I hold Mr. Bennetts teachings in the highest esteem. But I've always sensed he lacked humility. I think he just found it. :) The silver lining of his cloud

I'm looking forward to hearing about his revelations on the subject with his usual eloquence. Perhaps even another book, "The Virtues of Humility". I'd buy it.

I have mixed feelings about this. First, I LOVE to gamble and I gamble as often as I can. I gamble as much as I can afford and I think of it as a form of entertainment. Some people like going out to dinner, some like going mountain climbing...I like to gamble. Ok, second. If Bennett were just some conservative politician, I would say this was a witch hunt and feel sorry for him. But the fact of the matter is that he has made an industry out of virtue. He writes, lectures, etc. He should have known better, which leads me to believe that it is a problem, because he must have known that eventually this would happen with the kind of money he gambles with.

Maybe. But I am most inclined to simply say that this is not a big deal unless you can show me the crime committed.
