If anyone cares there was a monster live thread going on during the landing and some guy posted some code-type lingo that appeared to represent the "official" reported altitude/attitude/whatever of the plane as it came in.
Have no idea where it can from or if it was legit.

OK guys, how many times have you had to correct people on this topic in the past 24 hours?
You know, it really is a simple concept. I find it hard to believe people can't understand it. The plane approaches the deck on which there are 4 arrestor cables. Obvioulsly, the FIRST cable it reaches would be cable number one. The SECOND cable it reaches would be number two. And on to number four.
It really makes watching the news almost impossible when you know more than the reporters, and they aren't ashamed to demonstrated how much they don't know.
Anyway, thanks for continuing to correct the record.

The other three remain in place as the plane travels over them. The wire that gets snagged reels out.

The #4 cable is the first cable to catch, not the last. Incorrect. The wires are number ordered from the aft to forward on the deck. The targeted wire is usually #3 because it is safely forward of the stern of the ship and still provides plenty of area for run out and margin of the angle deck. If #3 is down for maintenance, #2 is targeted. #1 is short landing and least desired due to the risk of ramp strike. #4 is landing long, the safer alternative to being short.

"Once he got into the brief he just started remembering. It was a bonding of aviators. When we got into the plane, I gave him the stick and it was like he hadn't left the cockpit." I'm sure President Bush enjoyed the experience immensely. IIRC, he also got to fly some wing formation. I'm sure the skills came back quickly. What an honor it would be to have him on your airplane!
What a great guy! You could just tell he was loving every minute of it.
If this had been clinton, he would probably have puked his head off in the first 5 minutes after takeoff. Then after being carried off the airplane he would have taken a shower in the Captain's cabin and returned to grope all the babes while telling everybody what a great President he is. Watching the preening would have been unbearable for those sailors, not to mention the rest of us.
I remember one time in 1996 clinton came to our base campaigning for President. Everybody was encouraged to go to the big hangar for his rally. Fortunately for him, the campaign bussed in a bunch of union members and welfare "clients" from the city as almost nobody on base would even walk across the street to see him. The TV camera shots were all close in, not crowd shots because the crowd was so small. After all, how many fat welfare recipients and union thugs can you crowd into four greyhound busses?

I didn't get to see any video beyond the live fuzzy internet feed as it happened.

Now doesn't that picture seem more indicative of a family get together rather than a presidential address?

I watched it again and he caught number three. It happens quickly but you can see the three wire bend over the straight four wire.

Wrong. He caught the four wire. The LSO and the pilot admitted it and nearly anyone watching the video, except you, can see it.
