Napolitano gets her wish: Squaw Peak renamed Lori Piestewa Parkway

Per KFYI, the vote to approve this change was 5 for, 2 against. So much for a law that says there must be a five year waiting period.

Why is everyone so afraid of her? Does she and Hillary belong to the same club?

She was ambushed and killed in Iraq, a member of the maintenance unit that PFC Jessica Lynch belonged to. She was also a mother of two young children. May God bless her children.

Frankly, I think that if a Republican Governor had renamed some mountain after Lori Piestewa, most FReepers would be cheering. (Asbestos on!)

I recent found out that I am one quarter native american..
It was in roundabout sort of dubious way.
POD you met me..high cheekbones and rings around my eyes...
NOW I KNOW THE TRUTH.
And I would not change a thing.
Havign said that..Mrs. Piestewa should not have died. She should not have been anywhere near a front line for a wrong turn to have taken her life. SHe should have been home taking care of her babies.

Now it connects. God bless her and her family. We owe it as Americans to do what we can to make her family whole.

PS, no hyphenated Americanism? Good! I am Scot. Northern coastal Scot.
I can trace my lineage to at least the 1500s.

William Wallace is a personal hero. AS he is one of mine and I have no english blood at all. I often joke with my husband that the only Irish I have is that he gave me two children with some IRISH and since I carried them I must have some now. I always found that I was most Italian as that was the home I grew up in. This Indian thing..well I am not surprised.

I'm with you. This fine AMERICAN Soldier from the Hopi Nation did her duty to the extreme. She gave her life for the USA. She joins the 100,000's that did the same from 1772-2003. What a beautiful person. May her soul rest in peace.

I'm amazed at the PC Freepers around here who swallow PC when it's covered in a patriotic coating.
If they had wanted to name something after the lady in order to honor her, I wouldn't have griped. But they didn't want to honor her, they just wanted to get rid of the name "Squaw", and cynically used the tragic death of this soldier in order to do it.
When the subject came up a couple of years ago, someone suggested naming it after Barry Goldwater, an ex-Air Force pilot, Senator, and the presidential candidate credited with launching Conservatisim in America. But that was shut down, because there is a 5 year waiting period on renaming Geographic landmarks to prevent these things from getting too hasty.
But the Democrat ex-Clintonista governor rammed it through the committee over the head of the Chairman who didn't want to break the rules. In the process, they voted on the issue against the by-laws of the committee, which didn't have the required people in attendance.
But Freepers like this corruption, because its wrapped in patriotisim, and I've seen some positive comments because of the sex of the soldier.
Disapointed.
