Doctors in Hong Kong say they have discovered traces of the potentially deadly SARS virus in the stool and urine of patients discharged from the hospital after they were thought to have recovered from the virus.
This news comes after other doctors revealed evidence of permanent lung scars in patients who had been infected with SARS.
One doctor at a prominent Hong Kong hospital tells the Associated Press it is not clear whether the scarring resulted from SARS itself or the drug treatment being given to most patients, which is a combination of an anti-viral drug and steroids. The doctor also says it is not yet clear whether the lung scarring will have a harmful effect on the recovered patients.
Hong Kong's Director of Health, Margaret Chan, says most SARS patients in the territory are spending at least three weeks in the hospital before being allowed to go home. She also says they must be clear of symptoms for five days and then must remain at home for another two weeks.

I think this was reported quite some time ago about the spread of SARS at Amoy Gardens in Hong Kong.

I'm a little curious why they are admitting it now. We've discussed this for at least a couple of days.

I sure would like to know what the true situation in China is. But then again maybe I wouldn't.

"I'm a little curious why they are admitting it now. We've discussed this for at least a couple of days." Talk with some of your friends outside FR, you'll find that you're on the cutting-edge of SARS knowledge here on FR.

I shudder to think of what the real situation in China may be...and prayer is the only thing I can offer them.

When talking to my friends and co-workers, most of whom have post-graduate degrees, I find that I'm on the cutting-edge of just about everything. The in-depth knowledge and breadth of experience seen here is practically breath-taking.
Of course, we do tend to run jokes about cheese, moose, and showers of course, but a true student of FR will be far better infomred than his colleagues.

Doctors ... have discovered traces of SARS virus in the stool and urine of patients discharged from the hospital after they were thought to have recovered from the virus.WHY is this news? One generally doesn't completely eliminate viral contagion shortly AFTER the patient shows recovery - it can take months sometimes to remove the last traces of a disease!
This news comes after other doctors revealed evidence of permanent lung scars in patients who had been infected with SARS.
What do these guys expect - viri attack cellular tissue so there's *got* to be some evidence at some level after the virus is purged!
