Can a President make "recess appointments" of lifetime tenured judges?
To: Lancey Howard; deport
No.
And we're not in a recess.

I understand that a recess appointment is only good for a year, and then the nominee has to be confirmed in the regular manner or lose the appointment.

Fine with me for a year. Stick in a gross or so, the Dims will self destruct of apoplexy from brain short circuiting neurons.

I loved the suggestion. If they wont give us a vote on Pickering or the others, we appoint Bork or someone else that will really get the libs blood boiling. The deal is they give us a vote and we promise to give them a vote if future Dem president makes nomination, or they get a recess appointment of their worst nighmare. Particularly powerful if an appeals court were about to hear a big case of importance to the libs. ROTFWL.

So why is this breaking news?
To: patriciaruth
I understand that a recess appointment is only good for a year, and then the nominee has to be confirmed in the regular manner or lose the appointment. Does "in the regular manner" mean go to the floor or be filibustered?

This is a terrible idea. There is no guarantee that Bush will win in 2004, in which case ultra liberals will replace all these appointments. This recess appointment business is just an easy way out for not having the political will to fight the democrats and force them into a real filibuster. Additionally, it takes the issue of obstruction off the table and instead makes it look as if were the ones doing and end-around the system. This is a loose-loose proposal and typical of what Ive come to expect from the cowardly Republicans.

And we promise to give them a vote if future Dem president makes nomination
We have already done this: hardly any Republicans opened their meek mouths when bILLclinton nominated the ultraliberals Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer to the Supreme Court in 1993 and 1994.
