11:10PM Hutchison falls with Global Crossing deal on rocks (HUWHY, GBLXQ) by Allen Wan
Shares of diversified Hong Kong conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa (HUWHY) fell 0.5 percent to HK$43.70 Wednesday amid media reports that its deal with Singapore Technologies Telemedia to buy troubled telecom giant Global Crossing (GBLXQ) was on the skids. The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, which represents a number of agencies, has launched a rigorous 45-day review of the Global Crossing deal. The report said the U.S. government was concerned that foreign countries might use Global Crossing's 100,000-mile fiber-optic network to monitor U.S. telecom traffic. Hutchison Whampoa is controlled by Li ka-shing, one of the world's richest men. Citing an unidentified source, Reuters reported that Hutchison will likely pull out of the deal.

Without it any ship traversing from the Pacific to the Atlantic or vice versa needs to go around an entire continent.

1. Because our Great Grandfathers tax dollars built it
Hmmm...must have been done on the cheap. They didn't pay income taxes back then!! Anyway, we should have built it in Nicaragua.
2. Because we owned it
Haven't you ever donated an old junker car to a local charity?
3. Because it's strategic
Er, strategic to what? Our ships won't even fit through the canal anymore.
4. Because we're the arrogant capitalist pigs of the planet and we should stay that way
But the canal was never a project of capitalism. Shoot, in its heydey, I doubt it ever made any money. But just look at Panama City; now there is arrogant capitalism for you. If you didn't know better, you'd think you were in Miami.
5. Because I hope that answer (#4, above) offends the heck out of you for asking such a sucky question!!!
Nah. You'll have to try harder.

Our larger naval ships won't fit through the canal. Ditto for the larger, modern cargo ships.
Plus, you have to pay to go through the canal. For newer, faster ships, going around Cape Horn can be more economical overall.
On the other hand, the canal is a big hit with the cruise ships.
