More Work, Less Pay--They Call It Family Time Flexibility
L. A. Times | Steve Lopez

Posted on 04/29/2003 3:25:09 PM PDT by Calpublican

Someone emailed me a scathing article written by Steve Lopez in the LA Times. The exact title is listed above if anyone would like to access it at the LA Times site. I'm not familiar with procedures since I almost never post, but don't think we can directly link to the LA Times.

I can see plenty to criticize about the article since it is a real hitpiece on Bush, but don't know any of the technicalities of the issue and don't know how to respond. My friend asked me what I had to say about it.

According to the article, the Bush proposal says that everyone earning under $22,100/year would be eligible for overtime pay, even if you are management--say, manager of a fast-food place. It says that those earning over $65,000 would be catagorized as "management" and would not be eligible. He applauds the former and says the latter is unfair.

The article also says that employers, in a Bush-proposed, House-approved bill altering the Fair Labor Standards Act, would have more latitutude about awarding comp time in lieu of overtime pay.

Lopez offers some arguments against these changes. Of course, he ends the piece by taking a swipe at Bush by saying he leaves work at 6 p.m. in the middle of a war and takes a month off every year.

Would love to hear some responses from some of you who are up to speed on these labor issues so I can sound brilliant when I respond.

Guess the author longs for the good old days when we had a president in the WH who kept those late hours. Problem is he wasn't working on state business.

Well, that doesn't help me.

Please. Someone give me some ammo to respond. Have some ideas, but would like to hear others.
