The first season of PBS's "American Family," in which Edward James Olmos plays the conservative patriarch of a Hispanic Los Angeles family, comes out on DVD today.

But it's his role as another patriarch that's bound to get TV viewers in their 30s and 40s talking. Olmos is filming Sci Fi Channel's miniseries remake of the late '70s TV show "Battlestar Galactica." Olmos takes over the role of Commander Adama, originally played by the late Lorne Greene.

After reading this article, all I could muster is "Why?" (I'm assuming that there are those who would ask the same question re my posting it, too.)

Sci-Fi drops Farscape (the bastards). Brings on Tremors the series (and it's series BTW ;-), and now this?

Your right, why?

Why remake it? Is this going to turn out like Deep Space Nine?

I was flipping channels the other day and came across the worst sci-fi movie of all time. Don't know the name of it, but it used the ships (actually the footage from Battlestar Galactica), including the Galactica and the Viper and Cylon fighters. Story had nothing to do with BSG, from what I saw. The ship was supposed to be FROM Earth. Could only stand to watch about 5 minutes of it...

In the new version, Olmos said, it's impossible to tell Cylons from humans

I smell a backstory being dictated by budget limitations. Human-looking enemies don't require expensive robot suits.

"There's no two ways around it. If I were a purist, I wouldn't watch it. Don't waste your time. Get the old version on DVD. Don't hurt yourself. Don't go through the pain."

Sounds like Olmos is only doing this for the paycheck :)

I think I saw that too! I watched about 15 minutes before my head exploded in laughter. I used old stock footage from BSG as its own "special effects". Probably the cheesiest movie I have ever seen, and that includes "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes".

That movie was done for Mystery Science Theatre 3000, which is also out of production. SciFi Channel has some issues.

Actually, the movie was a failure but was pretty state of the art (models, early motion controlled camera shots) at the time so they recycled the models into the Galactica series to recoup some of the investment.

Just a little tidbit about Mormons In Space (aka Battlestart Galactica).

Bite your tongue. DS9 rocked - from the 3rd season on, it reminds me a lot of seasons 3 and 4 of TNG in terms of plot development (OK, so maybe I'm sort of maybe a little bit of a geek).

Now, BSG was always cheesy, and the only way I'd enjoy this would be if they used those stupid robotic dogs for minefield sweeping or for target practice.

As to woofie's request on Space:1999? Now THERE was a show - Martin Landau, Barbara Bain, the Moon going FTL because of nuclear explosions? TV doesn't get any cheesier than that.

Let me guess, the Cylons will all speak in a Texas accent and will be on the side of the eeevil capitalists who destroyed the Earth with toxic sludge so they could profit.

It was the most implausable SF show ever made - even more so than the original Lost in Space (which lost all character when they decided to change Dr. Smith from a menacing saboteur-spy to a mincing fairy).

That horrible flick was called SPACE MUTINY, and I caught it myself on MST3K a few weeks ago. I actually watched most of it - and no, it never got any better. I've seen Roger Corman stock-footage-fests that were better than this.
